FENDER DESIGN CHALLENGE

AIM:

To design a  front fender of a car by following the given master section as per the design considerations of OEM.

FENDER:

Fender is a front side outer panel placed above front wheels of a car.its primary purpose is to prevent sand ,mud, rocks ,liquids and another road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre. when the vehicle is moving , tires picks up stones and others and hurl them in all directions.fenders are basically present to prevent any injuries to pedestrain and control the motion of these particles

types of fenders :

  • full bumper type

these type of fenders were used in the earlier models of vehicles. it covers the front head lamps with respect to the bumper region. also , major portions were covered with steel. these models caused lot of wastage in the blank and increased overall body weight of car

  • half bumper type

modern vehicles are following this type of fenders.these fenders are mainly used for serving the purpose of cost-cutting and reducing enough proportions of the steel weight resulting in a reduction of the weight of the vehicle slightly. the blank size used and wastage is less compared to fulll bumper type fenders

MOUNTING POINTS OF A FENDER :

there are 5 important mounting points for a fender

  • Drip Area Mounting.
  • A-Pillar Mounting.
  • Sill Mounting.
  • Bumper Mounting.
  • Baffle Mounting.

fastners are used for mounting because ,all joints gets covered

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS OF A FENDER :

drip area :

The drip area is the most important mounting in a fender, it is the point where the fender has to be attached to the engine compartment.

  • from the rear end of fender it needs min 200mm clearance to install the cowl part
  • from the front end it should provide min 150 mm gap to install head lamp unit
  • 3 degree inclination on flange is provided in the drip area of fender to hide the joints of fender.completely to restrict visibility of joints from outside
  • the land area should have 35 to 40 mm length for the tool to come and work inside
  • at hood open condition, there should be min 200mm clearance between hood and fender drip area land for the tool to work inside
  • there should be min 10 mm horizontal clearance between engine room and land
  • distance between fender top edge and land should not exceed 60mm. spring back will occcur

 A-Pillar Mounting:

This mounting position is created for attaching the fender to A Pillar of the vehicle. The mounting has to be created by taking the reference from the A-pillar of the vehicle.Enough clearance should be given for the easy mounting of the wiper equipment.

Sill mounting :

It is the bottom mounting point of fender.it is designed in a way such the fender is attached to the sill of car body

bumper mounting :

This mounting point is created for attaching the bumper to the fender. It should have enough strength to hold the bumper steadily.

baffle mounting:

Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the Tyre which prevents chipping of rocks or sands inside engineroom. it is attached by means of push pins. holes provided on the fender flange for clipping its plastic pins.

THICKENING:

After completing the designing in the given  fender skin ,thickened the skin upto 0.75 mm

MULTI VIEWS OF THICKENED FINAL PART:

CONCLUSION :

Thus, Front fender is designed as per the design standards followed in OEM's and referring given mastersection with all the mounting points.
