Fender Design
Automobile Front Fender Design by making use of Catia V5 :
Design and development of car front fender
INTRODUCTION
The fender is a BIW component used as a frame for the wheel, the main purpose of a fender in an automobile is to protect the engine compartment from sand, dust, small stones, etc which are thrown into the air by the tire grip. These can cause damage to the car body and hence we use a fender to guard the tire. We have a front as well as a rear fender in a car, the rear fender is integrated with the body side. The front fender is a separate closure commodity.
There are two types of Fender in general:
- full bumper type
- half bumper type
Full bumper type :
The full bumper type fender was used in old cars, it covers the full area until the front lighting. But it has a lot of sheet metal material is unnecessary and increases the weight of the fender. These types of fenders are no longer used in the automobiles
Half bumper type :

Fender Mounting Parts:
A fender has a total of 5 mounting points through which it is mounted in a car. These are
- Sill mounting

- Splash Cover mounting

- Bumper Mounting

- Drip area

- A-pillar mounting
Fender :
The fender is part of an automobile or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, and liquids, from being thrown into the air and onto the engine compartment by the wheel when the vehicle is in motion A fender is part of a car that protects and frames its wheels and keeps mud from splashing it. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. When you get into a minor car accident, you can call it a "fender bender," and it's possible that your fenders did get slightly dented

Design considerations: while designing the fender mostly the mounting areas will be taken into consideration
1. Drip area
2. sill mounting
3. Bumper mounting
4. A-pillar mounting
Also, it is made sure that all the bolts are invisible and are internal only so that it doesn't affect the styling and looks of the car Embosses are provided in order to add strength and provide convenience during the bolting process.

DRIP AREA:
the drip area is part of a fender that is bolted onto the engine compartment. while designing the drip area the guidelines in the below image are followed
it should be designed in such a way that a gap of 150 mm from the headlight end .and 200 mm from the pillar end should be there.

beads are provided in order to preserve the structural integrity during bolting and also to add strength to the drip mount
BUMPER MOUNTING :
This is the region where the fender will be mounted onto the bumper with the help of bolts. the inputs for this are taken from the design team working on the bumper

A-PILLAR MOUNTING: This is for attaching the fender to the a-pillar area

SILL MOUNTING: sill mount is for attaching the fender to the sill area which is basically the bottom portion of the car near the front door

SPLASH COVER MOUNTINGS :
as an attachment to a snorkel mudflap on a vehicle face shield on the helmet and splash guard used for mounting the splash guard onto the fender
