Fender Design

OBJECTIVE:

To design the Drip Area, Sill mount area, bumper mount region and A-pillar mount Region.

INTRODUCTION:

CATIA is a multi-purpose software, used in Computer Aided Designing, Computer Aided Manufacturing, Computer Aided Engineering, PLM and 3D. It is used to design, simulate, analyze and manufacture products in variety of industries.

In our design, we use CATIA as the software to create various functioning operations and features to create the parts and their assembly.

FENDER:

Fender is a part of car body that covers the wheel. It’s main role is to protect the other car parts and pedestrian’s safety as well. When the car moves, there are many possibilities of throwing stones inwards and outwards. As also, a part of safety fender is designed. The fender has many mountings like cowl mounting, drip area, baffle mounting and some extra parts according to the design and requirement of car mountings. The drip is critical area to be concentrated as it is connected to the engine part. While designing, our design should match all requirements like safety, production line of possibilities and the mountings.

In fender, the most common types are full bumper type and half bumper type. Even in some cases, fender is designed differently to increase performance.

TYPES OF FENDER

  • Full Bumper type
  • Half Bumper type

 MOUNTING

  1. Bumper
  2. Drip
  3. A Pillar
  4. Sill
  5. Buffle(Splash)

Study of Fender drip Area:

  • It is the area through which fender is attached to engine housing through fasteners.
  • There should be some consideration followed to design the drip area of fender.
  • From back side of front fender, there will be 200mm clearance for cowl(wiper motor) mounting area.
  • From front side of front fender, there will be 150mm clearance for head lamp housing unit.
  • Remaining area we can use to design a drip area.
  • Height of fender can be minimum 80mm for child and adult (94mm,WAD 1700MAX, this +14 for increase in inertial force due to accident) impact.
  • Parting will minimum 5 not more than 50mm from SRL ( a reference line on HOOD side, a point on fender makes from a line of 45 degree from ground level ).
  • Drip area will not reach the engine assembly due to restriction of 40mm length, so there will some L-Shaped Bracket to connect with it

Designing of A piller Mounting :

There are three main types of pillar when referring to the design of a car - A, B, C.

  • The A pillars on your car hold either side of the front windscreen in place. They are the ones you see as you look straight at the car from the front.
  • B pillars start where the driver and passenger-side windows end as you look backward along the length of the car.
  • C pillars hold the sides of your car's rear window in place.
  • Some cars also have a D pillar, such as estate cars for example. D pillars hold the sides of the rear window of the car in place and can also sometimes serve as a housing for the rear lights like indicators, brakes and alike.

DRIP AREA

This area is assembled to the engine compartment. The design of drip area is provided in master design with all consideration and standards. Drip area is very important in designing as it is joined with engine compartment and gives a rigid assemble strength to the whole fender part. the master design is attached above.

BUMPER MOUNTING

Bumper is a structure attached to the front and rear end in order the restrict the shock after collision. This area is mounted to the bumper region. The fasteners can also be added in assembling the part.

SILL MOUNTING

Sill is the panel directly below the bottom of the door supporting the floor and may be used to combine the floor and the body . The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill body for reinforcement of the fender  panel , thus the sill mounting position is designed with holes and emboss  . M5 fasteners are used to fix the fenders on the sill body

A-PILLAR MOUNTING

A car has many pillars according to the design and the style of it. It is the number of vertical portions in a car. In a sedan type of car, there will be three pillars. If it is a hatchback model, then it has four pillars. The front most pillar is called as A- pillar. This mounting is assembled with A-pillar of the car.

BAFFLE MOUNTING

This area is to make the holding of stronger. This is to provide uniform holding all over the fender. Even the plastic part can be fixed in this region for lining part mounting. Baffle mounting or mudguard are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the Tyre  . it protects the car engine compartment and pedestrians from causing injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car is in motion . they are mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clips which are made up of plastics

APPLYING OF THICKNESS TO THE SURFACE .

The thickness of 0.75 mm inward on the final sewed surface  of the fender to the sheet metal parameters

CONCLUSION :

Finally design of fender  is done with the help of NX-CAD software  by following the master section Thus the Car bumper front fender and  mounting portion for the attachment component has been designed and studied the function of all the all the mounting area thus gained the knowledge of design and manufacture aspect of the cars
