Fender Design
Design of Drip Area, A Pillar, Sill, Baffle and Bumper Mountings on a Fender
Fender
Fender is a part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well (the fender underside). Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.
The main purpose of fenders on cars is that they shield the wheels and they protect the passengers, the pedestrians, and the other vehicles from stones, mud, liquid, and other debris that can fly in the air because of the speeding rotating wheels while the car is running.

Types of Fenders
- Full Bumper
This design of bumper had a larger size and the material wastage was higher. This type of Bumper a larger blank size resulting in higher cost and unnecessary wastage of material.
- Half Bumper
The companies now use this design of bumper. This has lower material wastage than the full bumper type. With a slight increase of blank size, two Bumpers can be created from the same blank, thus reducing material wastage and cost.
Mountings on a Fender
- Drip Area mounting
- A Pillar mounting
- Sill mounting
- Splash/ Baffle Mounting
- Bumper Mounting

Designing of the mounting
Drip Area
Of all the 5 mountings on the Fender, this is the most important mounting.
We follow the master sketch provided for designing its structure.
While designing the mounting, we need to consider a few design constrains as it is connected to the Engine compartment
It should have sufficient clearance in the front and rear end, to accommodate Cowl mounting and also the Headlamps of the car

Darts
For most of the mountings, we use Darts to provide strength to the bends and also reduce the NVH and thus prevent the mounts from breaking due to stresses or force acting on them
Conclusion
Thus, the Drip Area, A Pillar, Sill, Baffle and Bumper Mountings were created using the Fender data provided.
