Fender Design
Introduction:
Fender is a part of an automobile, cycle or any other vehicle Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.
For a vehicle moving forward, the top of the tire is rotating upward and forward, and can throw objects into the air at other vehicles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle.
In additional to fender other components like inner mount, side, and cowl mounts which are fastened with the help of well nuts. They provide sufficient protection to the engine room components and suspension etc.,
TYPES OF BUMPER:
1. FULL BUMPER TYPE:

The full bumper type fender was used in old cars, it covers the full area until the front lighting. But it has a lot of sheet metal material which is unnecessary and increases the weight of the fender. This type of fenders are no longer used in automobiles.
2. HALF BUMPER TYPE:

Mainly half bumper type is used in automobiles. It is basically related to scrap management. Half bumper type leads to less wastage of the blank.
We are changed from full bumper type to half bumper type to reduce the scrap rate per blank. In the full bumper, we can only produce one Fender per blank, whereas as a half bumper type we can produce 2 fenders per blank.
There are generally 5 mountings on a Front fender-
1. Body
2. A-Pillar
3. Sill
4. Cowl
5. Drip
. Design Data provided:
Master Section given:
Design of Fender
The main objective here is to design Drip area, Bumper mounting region, Sill mount region, A-Pillar mount region and Splash cover or wheel well mount regions for the given fender skin or styling surface.
Design Considerations:
- Embosses are provided to increase strength.
- The corners of the flanges are smoothened to ease the producibility of part.
- Fillet of 2-3mm is provided to avoid sharp corners and edges.
- Cut outs are provided at certain regions in order to save material as possible.
- Uniform wall thickness of 0.75 mm is maintained.
Drip area:
The drip area is a critical mounting area as it is located inside the engine compartment & acts as the major mounting region of the fender. The drip area designed based on the master section given below.
Above shown dimensions must be maintained, 200mm represents the distance from the engine cowl, while the 150mm is from the front of the head lamp. These dimensions have to be ensured for proper fitting of the fender when assembled to the vehicle. And mentioned figure shows fitment of drip area in engine compartment and hood side to get in good form.

Bumper Mount:
The Bumper mount area is a mounting area as it is located nearby bumper which is the above area of Grill.

Sill Mount:

A Pillar Mount:
Pillars are the vertical or near vertical supports of a car window area, which is mounted to the support of fender.

Cowl Area:
It is the wheel arc area of fender which is possession design for the support of baffle part fitment.

Fender Models:
The final design of the fender with all the mounting regions are shown below

CONCLUSION:
At the end, front fender is Designed from the given skin data and the master section provided with Drip mounting, A-pillar, Sill, Bumper and Splash mountings using CATIA V5.
