FENDER DESIGN

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this project is to design a fender using CATIA V5 software.

INTRODUCTION

Fender is the american english term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary propose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids and another road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

Design of any product starts from an requirement. The design engineer sketches the product based on the needs. Then the 2D sketch with the proper dimensions is converted into 3D model using designing softwares. While designing a product first we consider the needs of customer then after the possibilitys of manufacturing. So the role of the design engineer is to design the product that can be easily manufactured and with less cost effective. The process of development of design carries on until the design satisfies the customer needs. In this project we are going to design a car fender.

FENDER

The main purpose of the fender is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquid and another road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire.

There are two types of fenders

  1. Full bumper type
  2. Half bumper type

Full bumper type

This type of bumper is not commonly used because this design is more scarp producing one during manufacturing. The blank of steel or aluminum used to produce this type has more wastages. This type is not economically good to manufacture.

Half bumper type

This types of fendrs most commonly used. The cons of full umper type is satisfied in this design, and the blank area of wastage while producing the part is drastically reduced by scrap management.

USES OF FENDER

Cleanliness: Protect the car, occupants and passers by from items, water, mud, snow, ice, thrown off the tires as you drive.

Safety: protects pedestrian from the wheel. its better to be it by a laterlly moving fender than a rolling tire, keeps loose, streaming items from being wrapped up in a rolling wheel.

Aerodynamics: Smooths the car profile so you don't get a lot of drag off the uncovered wheels. Some fendera are enclosed on the side for this.

General Appearance: Looks better with fender, gives a finished look, looks more streamlined.

MOUNTING REGIOND ON FENDER

There are 5 mounting regions on the fender

  • A-pillar mounting
  • Body mounting
  • Sill mounting
  • Bumper mounting
  • Drip mounting

THE MASTER SECTION

DRIP ARE MOUNTING

It is the important mounting unit of the fender. It is connetcted with the engine compartment therefore the lot of desugn constraints are to be followed while designing the fender.Embossing are provided on the mounting to strengthen them during fastening.

SILL MOUNTING AREA

Sill is the panel directly below the bottom of the door supporting the floor and may be used to combine the floor and the body. The bottom end of the fender is mounted on the sill body for reinforcement of the fender panel, thus the sill mounting position is designed with holes and emboss.

A-PILLAR MOUNTING AREA

The A-pillar is the structural pillar that combines the body to the roof. This make the sides of the windshiled rest. Front fenders are fastened to the A- pillar to form a robust structure.

BUMPER MOUNTING AREA

Bumper mounting area is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender with the help of the fasteners.

BAFFLE MOUNTING AREA

Baffle mounting are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch over the tyre. It protects the car engine compartment and pedastrians from causing injuries from chip out debris on the road when the car is in motion.

THICKNESS OF THE SURFACE : 0.75 mm

DIFFERENT VIEWS OF FENDER:

CONCLUSION

Finally all mounting areas for the fender designed from skin data and master section is done by following all design rules.
