Fender Design
REPORT
FENDER
A fender is the aesthetic component of the car body that keep mud, rocks, and other road debris from being thrown around by the tires. the fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If there was nothing covering the wheels, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires.
MANUFACTURING OF FENDERS
Fenders are commonly manufactured by using stamping process in automotive industry. apart from fender a major part of BIW is also manufactured by using stamping process. In stamping, a device called a stamping press is used with a series of dies to cut and form metal into various shapes.

TYPES OF FENDER
FULL BUMPER TYPE
These types of fenders were used in earlier models of vehicles. They contribute to the major increment of the steel weight by just covering the front headlights with respect to the bumper region. The problem associated with this kind of fender is there is a lot of wastage in the blank and every inch of a material is a cost to the industry.

HALF BUMPER TYPE
These fenders are mainly used for serving the purpose of cost-cutting and reducing enough proportions of the steel wait resulting in a reduction of the weight of the vehicle slightly. They can be economically manufactured, i.e by slightly increasing the blank size, we can produce two fenders at a time.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
A front fender has mainly five mounting positions, they are
- DRIP MOUNTING
- A PILLAR MOUNTING
- SILL MOUNTING
- BUMPER MOUTING
- BAFFLE MOUNTING
DRIP MOUNTING
Drip mounting of the front fender. this is the mounting where fender is attached to the engine compartment. the major design considerations of the drip area are distance from the headlamp housing and distance from the wiper equipment area. there must be 150 mm required between front area of fender and front side of drip mouting to accomadate the head lamp housing and 300mm or less is required between rear side of fender to the rear side of drip mount to accomadate the wiper equipment. the length of drip mount is depend on the length of fender.

A PILLAR MOUNTING
This mounting is designed to attach the fender with A pillar. enough clearance should provided to accomadate the wiper motor.

SILL MOUNTING
This is the lower portion amoung the fender mountings. this mounting is attaching to the sill area.

BUMPER MOUNTING
This mounting is attached to the front bumper.

BAFFLE MOUNTING
This mounting is used to attach a plastic component called baffle or fender protector.
