FENDER DESIGN CHALLENGE

ABOUT FENDER -

Fender is a part of an automobile that frames a wheel well. Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks and other particles to be picked up by wheel in motion and thrown in the air or engine compartment.

It serves a safety purpose for both pedestrian safety and engine compartment safety.

OBJECTIVE -

Our obejective is to design the front fender mountings according to the engineering standards.

Fig :- shows the highlight of front fender.

MOUNTINGS -

Mountings are made to mount the fender properly to the body of the vechile, the mountings to be made in such a way that

it wont create any issue to aesthetics of the vechile and it should be stong enough to keep the fender in position properly.

There are 5 Mountings placed in front fender -

  1. Drip area mounting.
  2. A-pillar / cowl mounting.
  3. Bumper side mounting.
  4. Baffle mounting.
  5. Sill mounting.

DESIGNING THE VARIOUS MOUNTINGS ON FENDER SKIN -

Fig :- shows the different views of front fender with the mountings.

Some of the design criteria we've considered.

  • Embosses are provided to increase the strength.

  • Smooth curves are designed for easy manufacturing of panel.

  • Ribs are provided to drip area mount to give structual support and extra strengh.

  • Maintain extra 10mm from the flat surface for the fastner holes.

  • All fillets should maintain 2 or 3mm radius in most regions.

  • Thickness of fender is 0.75mm.

As per the engineering standards, we've made 5 mountings in the front fender skin.

Drip mounting -

Drip ares mounting is one of the most mounting in the fender.

This mounting is directly attached to the engine compartment side of the car .

Some of the design consideration is taken in term of design this mounting, like a min. of 150mm distance is kept from the front side and a distance 300mm or less can be kept on the rear side .

the total length of drip area from the top of fender should be less than 40mm ,this leverage is to avoid the springback in the fender.

the outer edge of the mounting should atleast 10mm away from any nearby component in the engine .

Multiple darts are provided to increase the strength of the mounting .

Fig :- shows the master section for designing the Drip mounting.

Below is the image attached to show the drip area mounting designed by considering the engineering constraints.

Fig :- shows the Drip mounting.

A-pillar mounting -

A-pillar mounting is to be attached to the A-pillar of the car and it totally depends on the positioning of the A-pillar of the car.

Fig :- shows the A-pillar mounting.

Bumper mounting -

Bumper mounting area is used to fix the plastic bumper to the fender.

Fig :- shows the Bumper mounting.

Baffle mounting -

Baffle or mudguard mounting are clip fit type of mounting on the inner side of the fender arch. they are mounted on the fender using a special type of locking clips which are made up of plastics .

Fig :- shows the Baffle mounting.

Sill mounting -

Sill mounting is mounted directly below the bottom of the body supporting the floor and may be used to combine the floor and the body

Fig :- shows the Sill mounting.

CONCLUSION -

Sucessfully designed various front fender mountings according to the engineering standards.
