Fender Design Challenge

Fender is the part of an automobile that frames the wheel well. The primary purpose is to prevent the sand, mud, rocks, liquids and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. The automobile contains four fenders which covers four wheels.

Purpose: The main purpose of the fender is to prevent the particles from hitting the pedestrians.

Material Suggested :

Aluminium, plastics, magnesium, and fiber materials.

Types :

Full Bumper Fender: This type of fender covers the frontal portion of the wheel

Half Bumper : Half bumper is designed to be produced with the blank and the amount of materials used is greatly reduced

Different mountings:

There are 5 mounting points in a Fender . They are

  • Body
  • A pillar
  • Sill
  • Cowl
  • Drip

There are many elaborate designs include fender skirts too

Manufacturing processes

  • Sheet metal embossing is a type of a stamping process to create raised or sunken sheet metal with proper reliefs
  • Bending and Flanging process is used for bending the sheet metal at the required angle
  • Punching is a type of a forming process which uses a tool to punch a hole into the sheet metal

Front fender is designed based on the design standards :

General Considerations for Design :

Design parameters:

3 degrees spring back must be secured for the drip area to account for the spring back effect.

The clearance of more than 6mm must be left between the holes and the edges

The bend radius of the sheet should be more than three times the thickness of the sheet metal

The draft angle should be taken into consideration in order to create manufacturable parts.

Drip Area Mounting region:

The drip area is the area with many flanges and the flanges are created by taking into consideration of the draft angle also

A-pillar Mounting region:

The mounting region where the fender is mounted on the A-pillar region of the car

Body Mounting region:

The region of the fender which is connected to the body side of the car

Bumper Mounting region:

The bumper region of the fender connects the

Sill Mounting region:

Baffle region:

This region is used to attach the wheel Arch with the fender

Isometric View of Front Fender:

Thus front fender designed with Drip Area, A-pillar, Bumper, Sill, Body and Buffle as per the design and Engineering standards
