Design of backdoor

BACK DOOR DESIGN

  • Backdoor or Tailgate is the hinged door at the rear part of a vehicle and can be moved up or down.
  • It lets us access the boot space or trunk.
  • It contains windshieldglass that helps in rear visibility.
  • It also contains tail lamps, wiper motor, number plate mounting area etc.

COMPONENTS

Inner Panel

  • It is the component which gave strength to the overall back door assembly and dissipate force in outward direction.
  • Embosses are given to make the inner panel stiffer and good endurance while crash.
  • It is created in Y shape to allow the force to flow and get dissipated outside and hence to protect the vehicle occupants.
  • Inner panel is designed to dissipate the stress in outward direction.

Outer panel

  • It is outermost part of the backdoor assembly which gives style to the automobile.
  • It is assembled with inner panel through a process called hemming.

Hinge reinforcement

  • Hinge is used for helping the door to open and close in a convenient way.
  • Hinge reinforcements are given to compensate strength of the back door due to the addition of hinges.

Gas stay reinforcement

  • Gas stay is a device used to support the door in open condition. One end of gas stay is fixed on body side and other end on door.
  • Gas stay reinforcements are given to compensate strength of the back door due to the addition of gas stay.

Wiper motor reinforcement

  • Wiper motor reinforcements are given to compensate strength of the back door due to the addition of wiper motor.

Latch and striker reinforcement

  • Latch and striker is used for the locking mechanism of back door.
  • Latch and striker reinforcements are given to compensate strength of the back door due to the addition of latch and striker.

DESIGN PARAMETERS

Latch placement

Hinge axis is taken as centre to draw a circle at the middle of the backdoor and latch is placed perpendicular to that circle.

Hemming

Hemming is the process of joining of two surfaces using set of rollers and to bend the parent part over the sub part.

Relief

Relief is given on the outer panel to decrease the stress concentration.

Draft analysis

  • It is done to check whether the design is produceble or not.
  • Minimum draft angleof 7* is taken for the analysys.
