Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

WHEEL ARCH

It is the semicircular part positioned above the wheel of a vehicle.

The design of wheel arch will be difrrent based on countries and the main goal in designing of fender wheel arch should satisfy the regulation and standards as per countries.

JAPAN REGULATION STANDARD

  • The clearence L is more than 5 mm shoul be following in japan regulation and standard
  • Take an angle of 30 degree,50 degree and 90 degree and from the centre of wheel and create vertical line B,A and C as shown below,L value has been measured between point B,A,C and edge boundry of fender wheel arch.

US REGULATION STANDARD

  • Make clearence check details on all positions from -100* to 100* & make the clearence check table.
  • All values should be greater than 5 mm to satisfy the regulations
  • The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm at a line 308 forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axix of wheel.

EUROPEAN REGULATION STANDARD

The clearence L will be more than 10mm at the section ofSB,SA,SC,SD,SE.

The section SA will be 90 degree from the centre of wheel.

The section SB will be 30 degree from the line SA.

The section SC will be 50 degree from the line SA.

The section SE will be 150 mm from the horizontal from the point of centre.

The section SD will be the distance between SC and SE

CALCULATION OF WHEEL ARCH GAP USING EUROPEAN STANDARDS

Measured values

Section SA

Value is 9.94 mm

Section SB

Value is 10 mm

Section SC

Value is 0.11 mm

Section SD

Value is 1.73 mm

Section SE

Value is 3.53 mm

POSITION MEASURED VALUE REQUIRED VALUE REGULATION
SA 9.94 mm 10 mm Not satisfied
SB 10 mm 10 mm Satisfied
SC 0.11 mm 10 mm Not satisfied
SD 1.73 mm 10 mm Not satisfied
SE 3.53 mm 10 mm Not satisfied

For this design wheel arch gap distance is only satisfied at SA according to european standards. At SB,SC,SD,SE the minimum gap 10 mm not achieved,so this car fails.
