Design of backdoor
Design of car back door using NX CAD
Introduction: A car door is a type of door, typically hinged, but sometimes attached by other mechanisms such as tracks, in front of an opening which is used for entering and exiting a vehicle. A vehicle door can be opened to provide access to the opening, or closed to secure it. These doors can be opened manually, or powered electronically. Powered doors are usually found on minivans, high-end cars, or modified cars.
Unlike other types of doors, the exterior side of the vehicle door contrasts in its design and finish from its interior side (the interior part is typically equipped with a door card or a door panel that has decorative and functional features. The exterior side of the door is designed of steel or other material like the rest of the vehicle's exterior. In addition, its decorative appearance, typically colored with a design, is intended to match with the rest of the vehicle's exterior, the central purpose being to add to the overall aesthetic appeal of the vehicle exterior.
- The back door or tail gate is the hinged door at the rear end of the car.
- It comprises of rear windshield, wiper unit, tail lights, gas stay/power lift, rear sensors, parking assist camera etc.
- The back door also gives us access to the trunk/boot space of the car.
Design criteria for back door
- Visibility criteria
- Latch and striker position
- Hinge position
- Gas stay position
- Boot space availability
- Hemming and relief areas.
Tests conducted on a back door
- Bend test
- Torsion test
- Endurance test
- Assembly load case
- Abusive cases
- Dent test

Components of a back door
- Outer panel or styling surface or aesthetic surface
- Inner panel
- Rear windshield
- Tail lights assembly
- Wiper assembly
- Latch and striker assembly
- Gas stay/power lifter unit
- Rubber sealant.
- Hinge assembly
- Reinforcements for hinge, gas stay/power lifter and latch and striker.
Design methodology
| 1 | Download the given data |
| 2 | Creation of inner panel |
| 3 | Creation of embosses on the inner panel |
| 4 | Locate latch and striker point |
| 5 | Create latch and striker emboss |
| 6 | Creation of reinforcements |
| 7 | Assembling the reinforments with the inner panel |
| 8 | Hemming the inner and outer panel together |

Latch and striker placement

The striker position is obtained by drawing an hinge axis from the hinge. Then from the mid-point of this hinge axis a circle is drawn, this circle must be tangential to the striker. This determines the position of latch and striker on the back door inner panel.
Draft analysis
Draft analysis is required to check if the part has required draft or not. Draft is required so that the part can be ejected from its mould.

Conclusion
Automobile back door is designed using NX CAD using the given styling surface and by making necessary design considerations.
