Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT
1) Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2
AIM & INTRODUCTION:
From the week 2 Project file, in the layout using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level.
PROCEDURE:
- Open the project file from week 2. Go to Revit software, open the file challenge 01 from week 2 as shown below.

- Here the residential floor plan layout is appeared.

- From the Architectural tab, select the floor tab and drop down the menu.

- Immediately a ribbon tab will appear. From that select the pick line option.

- Carefully choose the boundaries for the floor plan as shown below. Check that the boundaries are closed loop.

- Click on the tick mark after selecting the boundaries.

- Cross check the floor we have given in the 3D view.

Here we can see that the floor is appeared in the 3D view.
- Now need to give appropriate material to the floor. For that click on the floor which we are given toselect the floor.

Then go to the edit type on the properties browser for changing the material of the floor.

Then a dialogue box will appear, click on edit option.

From the dialogue box appearing while clicking on edit option, in the material we are given is concrete. To change the material click on the 3 dots near to concrete.

We can select the different materialsas our wish, Ihave choosen a textile bamboo weave material and then click OK. Then click on the Apply button for applying the material to the floor and then click OK.

Then we can see that the material has changed in the 3D view.

- Similarly we can change the thickness of the floor. Select the floor and click on edit type option. From the dialogue box appearing click on edit option. Then we can see that the thickness for the material we chosen is about 6". We can edit and change to 1' as shown below.

Then click Ok button. From the dilaogue box appearing click apply and press OK. Then the thickness has been changed to 1' in the 3D view.

RESULT: In the layout using floor tool under architecture tab we have given the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor level.
2)Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.
a. Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected
b. Which option is convenient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?
AIM & INTRODUCTION:
Need to draw the walls and by using the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls.
PROCEDURE:
- We have already created the walls using architectural walls in previous week project.
- Now we need to change the material for the walls we are given, we need to select the wall as shown below.

Here the walls we provided is generic
- Then go to edit type, from the dialogue box appearing click on edit option.

From the dialogue box appearing the material need to be changed, here under material category there are 3 dots. Click on that for selecting the material which we want to give.

- From the material I have chosen Brick, soldier course and then press OK.

From the dialogue box appearing click apply and press Ok for applying the material to the wall.
- So in the 3D view the materialchange has been appeared.

- Now we need to change the thickness of the wall, select the wall and then go to edit type. From the dialogue box appearing go to edit and he thickness of the wall is 8".

Now change the thickness to 12" or 1'and press OK.

Then we need to press apply button on the dialogue box and press OK. Now we can see the thickness of the wallhas been changed.

- We need to verify that top and bottom of the walls are constrained. For that from the property browser check the elevation.

Here we can see that the height of wall is contrained because if we change the height of wall, the height of level also be changed.
a) Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected
Here if the wall height is changed the level will also changed automatically. Therefore we need to select the top constraint as unconnected, so the height of wall doesnt changes with the levels.
b) Which option is convenient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?
For modelling a wall the height option is convinient because the wall can be created above the levels.
RESULT: We have drawn walls and provide appropriate thickness and material for the wall. Also checked the walls are constrained.
3) Copy the model elements ( wall, floor ) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level . Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align elements to a different level
AIM : Need to copy and paste options for aligning elements to the different level.
INTRODUCTION: If we copying all the elements from a selected level then we can paste the smae in different level by choosing the levels.
PROCEDURE:
- Select the model element from the ground floor plan which we need to copy to the next level as shown below.

Immediately a ribbon tab will appear, Select the copy to clipboard option.
- From paste option click on the Aligned the selected levels option. Now a tab will appear to select the desired level. Select the Level 2 option and click OK.

Then from the 3D view the levels are alligned in the desired level.

RESULT: By using copy and paste option the modelisalligned in the different level.
4)Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms
a. Living Room/ Drawing Room ( 15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room ( 9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room ( 10’ X 12’ )
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’)
The above are for examples. You can use them or use your measured entities to create your model based on your layout. You may include entry walkway, Patios or Guest rooms based on your creativity and purpose of modeling. Convert units if you are using metric system
AIM: Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit.
INTRODUCTION:
Need to give the different types of walls such as generic masonry, exterior walls, interior walls, retaining walls, soffits.
PROCEDURE:
- Open the Revit software with Imperial Architectural Template.
- Save the file appropriately.
- Need to draw the wall for the layout fromthe Architecture tab.

Select the interior walls which need to be edit as partition walls. From the property browser we can select the suitable wall type.

- In this its cleared that the interior partition walls are created and exterior glazed wall is provided.

RESULT: Here the walls are drawn with architectural tab, also interior partition walls and exterior glazed walls are also created.
5) Based on week 2 assignment, the components to be included in a residential unit were inserted to the Revit file. Place these components in appropriate locations to add details to your residential model
a. Place Doors and windows in the wall at appropriate locations
b. The Living Room must include furniture set, couch table and TV desk and shelf cabinets
c. The Dining Room must include a table and chairs serving the purpose of eating
d. Bed Room must include a bed set, shelf, lighting and individual study desk and chair
e. Rest room should include bath tub and plumbing fixtures discussed in class
f. Kitchen should include countertops, gas stove cabinet and shelves to store food items
g. The wash/storage room can include washing machines and shelves to store clothes
All the components are available in Revit Library. Use them to place at appropriate locations to add details to your model. Use 3D navigation to check the model and its authenticity on a real time basis to verify the model.
AIM: Need to insert the components required to the layout at appropriate locations.
