Challenge

Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT

Q1. Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2

Ans: The step by step procedure to create a floor in the ground floor level in Revit is as follows

  • Open Revit software
  • Open the Week 2 challenge 'Challenge 2' from the 'MODELS'

  • Select 'Floor' in the 'Architecture' tab

  • Using 'Line' tool, draw the floor layout

  • Select the floor, go to 'Property Browser' and click on the 'Edit Type'

  • Click on the 'Edit...' under the 'Structure - Value'

  • Change the 'Structure [1] - Material' to *'Oak Flooring' and 'Structure [1] - Thickness' to '2 feet'
    • *Unable to access the material browser
    • *In this case, rename the material by standard names in the Revit library

  • Click 'OK'

  • Click 'Grids' in the 'Architecture' tab

  • Draw transverse grids A, B, C, D, E with required spacing spacing
    • Draw Grid 1 using 'LINE' in the 'Grid'
    • Rename the Grid 1 to 'A'
    • Select the line and 'COPY' 4 times with required spacing

  • Draw longitudinal grids 1 to 5 with required spacing
    • Draw Grid F using 'LINE' in the 'Grid'
    • Rename the Grid F to '1'
    • Select the line and 'COPY' 4 times with required spacing

Q2. Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.

a. Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected
b. Which option is convenient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?

Ans: The step by step procedure to create walls based on the floor layout in the ground floor level in Revit is as follows

  • Select 'Wall' in the 'Architecture' tab
    • Draw a rectangular layout (30'-2"x48'-8") using line tool

  • Select the wall, go to 'Property Browser' and click on the 'Edit Type'

  • Click on the 'Edit...' under the 'Structure - Value'

  • Change the 'Structure [1] - Material' to 'Clad - White' and 'Structure [1] - Thickness' to '10 inches'
    • *Unable to access the material browser
    • *In this case, rename the material by standard names in the Revit library

  • Click 'OK'

a. Based on my observation, by using 'Base Constraint' and 'Top Constraint' is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels

b. By Height is convenient for modeling walls

Q3. Copy the model elements ( wall, floor ) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level . Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align
elements to a different level

Ans: The step by step procedure to copy the model elements (wall, floor) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level in Revit is as follows:

  • Select floor and walls in the ground floor

  • Click 'Copy to Clipboard' option in the 'Modify' tab

  • Go to 'Project Browser' and click on the 'First Floor'

  • Click 'Aligned to Selected' option in the 'Modify' tab

  • Paste the floor and walls from clipboard and align to the first floor

  • Changed the floor thickness to 5"

Q4. Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms

a. Living Room/ Drawing Room ( 15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room ( 9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room ( 10’ X 12’ )
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’)

The above are for examples. You can use them or use your measured entities to create your model based on your layout. You may include entry walkway, Patios or Guest rooms based on your creativity and purpose of modeling. Convert units if you are using metric system

Ans: In this problem, my measured entities are used to create the model. The rooms with room size is given below.

a. Living Room (15'6" X 12'8")

b. Dining Room (15’6" X 8’10")

c. Bed Room (14’8" X 10'8", 14’8" X 13'10" and 14’8" X 10'8")

d. Rest Room (5’10 X 4'5", 7' X 7'8" and 7' X 5'10")

e. Kitchen (15’6" X 10’8")

f. Storage Room (7' X 5'10")

e. Sitout (9'8" X 9'10")

The step by step procedure to create separate rooms within the residential unit in Revit is as follows:

  • Select 'Wall' in the 'Architecture' tab
  • Use 'Offset' tool to create interior walls
    • Offset 10'-8" from base wall inwards
    • Offset 7'-8" from previous wall inwards
    • Offset 5' from previous wall inwards
    • Offset 13'-10" from previous wall inwards
    • Offset 8'-10" from previous wall inwards
    • Offset 5'-10" from previous wall inwards
    • Offset 7' from leftside wall inwards
    • Offset 7'-8" from previous wall inwards
    • Offset 5'-10" and 8'-6" from previous wall inwards
  • Use 'Split Element' tool to cut different segments of the wall
  • Use 'Delete' tool to delete different segments of the wall

  • Select 'Room Seperator' in the 'Architecture' tab

  • Use 'Line' tool to seperate rooms

  • Select 'Room' in the 'Architecture' tab

  • Place the room tag in all the rooms
  • Rename the rooms with proper names
