Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT
AIM_1: Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, use the floor tool under the architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser to create a layout on the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2
INTRODUCTION: In the following question the main aim is to open up the project which was created in the last challenge and apply a floor to the whole layout, aligned to the grids, and thus finally create a floor at the ground level of the residential unit aligned to the grids. After that change the properties of the floor in the properties bar, and give desired thickness and material to it. Please have a look at the below procedure and snips for more clarity!
PROCEDURE:
- Open the Project which was made in the last challenge.
- A floor was created in that last challenge.
- Select the floor and click on the edit type to open its properties.
- Now go in the edit and change the property or type of the flooring and also change the thickness of the floor.
- Thus the flooring is created.
- The floor was created concerning the grid lines.
- Have a look at the below snips for more understanding.
RESULTS: A floor height and properties can be managed from the properties tab.

AIM_2: Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select the appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.
a. Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected
b. Which option is convenient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?
INTRODUCTION: In the following question the main aim is to create the walls of the layout, and apply materials to the wall from the property browser. Please have a look at the below snips and procedure for more clarity! Also, determine which of the methods is best unconnected or associated with the level for creating a project. Finally, conclude with a good reason to choose a convenient option from the height and depth drafting of the model.
PROCEDURE:
- Create the walls by selecting the wall option from the architecture bar of the REVIT.
- Once all the walls are created, select one wall and go to the edit type.
- Change the properties of the wall as and where required.
- Look at the below snips for more clarity.
ANSWERS:
a: Based on the observations, both things are equally important. Unconnected walls help in making a better architectural appearance, while the associated levels when locked, help at all levels. When the levels are locked, any changes are made to the levels, and all changes are applied to the whole structure.
b: The best option is convenient for modeling by height. This is the best option because normally we go from the superstructure to the top, not the other way around.
RESULTS: The walls were created and their properties were edited using the property tab.

AIM_3: Copy the model elements ( wall, floor ) modeled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level. Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align
elements to a different level
INTRODUCTION: In the following question the main aim is to copy the whole ground floor layout, to the other associated levels. Please have look at below snips and procedure for more clarity.
PROCEDURE:
- Once the level of the plinth is created, select the whole section you want to copy.
- Click on the copy on clipboard option.
- Then select the paste option beside the copy option and then click on the align on selected levels option.
- Thus the copy is created on another level.
- Please have a look at the below snips for more clarity.
RESULTS: The easiest way to make a highrise building is to create one floor and then keep copying the whole using the align to selected level option to create a whole building.

AIM_4: Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms
a. Living Room/ Drawing Room ( 15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room ( 9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room ( 10’ X 12’ )
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’)
The above are examples. You can use them or use your measured entities to create your model based on your layout. You may include an entry walkway, Patios, or Guest
rooms based on your creativity and purpose of modeling. Convert units if you are using the metric system
INTRODUCTION: In the following question the main aim is to create the partition of the floor and create different rooms and kitchen etc. Some of the examples are given above for the sizes of the rooms and kitchen. The best use of creativity is over here, in the utilizing and planning of the floor area in the most efficient way possible! Please have a look at below snips and procedure for more clarity.
PROCEDURE:
- Once the outer/exterior walls are created.
- Create the partition walls to create the kitchen, bedrooms, lobby, stairs, washrooms, balcony, verandah, etc.
- Create these partitions using a wall of lesser thickness than the exterior walls.
- Please have a look at the below snips for more clarity.
RESULTS: The whole layout of the plan was created and partitions were created to differentiate the rooms.

AIM_5: Based on the week 2 assignment, the components to be included in a residential unit were inserted into the Revit file. Place these components in appropriate locations to add details to your residential model
a. Place Doors and windows on the wall at appropriate locations
b. The Living Room must include a furniture set, couch table, and TV desk and shelf cabinets
c. The Dining Room must include a table and chairs serving the purpose of eating
d. Bed Room must include a bed set, shelf, lighting, and individual study desk and chair
e. The restroom should include a bathtub and plumbing fixtures discussed in class
f. A kitchen should include countertops, a gas stove cabinet, and shelves to store food items
g. The wash/storage room can include washing machines and shelves to store clothes
All the components are available in Revit Library. Use them to place at appropriate locations to add details to your model. Use 3D navigation to check the model and its authenticity on a real-time basis to verify the model
INTRODUCTION: In the following question the main aim is to add different types of components to the whole residential unit. Components like doors, windows, electrical appliances, furniture, cabinets, sofa sets, washroom accessories, etc. All these components are required to be added at appropriate destinations. After placing the components give details to the whole model. Please have a look at below snips and procedure for more clarity.
PROCEDURE:
- Once the whole structure is created, now comes the turn of the furniture and families.
- Click on add a component option and then click on the load a family option.
- The menu pops up.
- Select the US folder and there will be a variety of components available in it.
- Load whichever components you like and arrange them in the best possible ways.
- Please have look at the below snips for more clarity.
RESULTS: The families and furniture were added to create the best aesthetical view from an architectural point of view.
