Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT

1) Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2.

AIM: To add floor with appropriate material and thickness to the residential unit created in week 2.Also,to align the floor plan with grids created in week 2.

INTRODUCTION: The procedure to create floor of the residential unit and align it to the grids is explained in detail and the final result is given.

PROCEDURE:

  • Select the Floor tool by going to Architecture>Floor.
  • Select the pick line option from the draw panel.
  • Select the outer edges of the walls in the ground floor plan.
  • Click on the finish edit mode icon.
  • The Floor has been created.
  • Go to the propeties window>Select the desired floor type from the drop-down list.
  • Go to edit type from the properties window.
  • In the type properties dialog box, Click on duplicate.
  • Enter a new name for the floor-Residential floor_1.
  • Next go to Structure>Edit.
  • In the Edit assembly Dialog box, go to the material Column.
  • Again in the edit assembly dialog box, adjust the floor thickness as and if required.
  • Go to the Architecture> Datum panel> Grids.
  • Repeat the procedure as in Q.4 week2, to create the grids.
  • Align the floor plan to the grids.
  • Save the project file.

RESULT:

It was Successfully illustrated how to add floor to the residential unit, edit the thickness and assign desired material of the floor. The Floor plan was then alogned to the grids created in week2.

2) Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.

a. Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected.
b. Which option is convenient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?

AIM: To modify walls, and assign appropriate material and thickness to the walls. Also to Check the top and bottom constraints of the walls.

INTRODUCTION: The procedure to modify walls, and assign appropriate material and thickness to the walls in a residential unit in Revit is explained in detail and the final result is given.

PROCEDURE:

  • To add new walls to the unit.
  • Project Browser>Floor Plans>Ground Floor.
  • Select the Wall tool by Going to the Architecture>wall.
  • Select the line option from the draw panel.
  • Create or modify walls if required.
  • Select all the external wall of the residential unit.
  • Go to the propeties window>Select the desired floor type from the drop-down list.
  • Go to edit type from the properties window.
  • In the type properties dialog box, Click on duplicate.
  • Enter a new name for the floor-Ext_wall_1.
  • Next go to Structure>Edit.
  • In the Edit assembly Dialog box, go to the material Column.
  • Select a Suitable material from the material browser.
  • We can also change the finish material from the edit assembly dialog box.
  • Again in the edit assembly dialog box, adjust the floor thickness as and if required.
  • The Same Steps can be Repeated for editing the internal wall type.
  • Select all the external walls of the residential unit.
  • Go to properties window> Check the base and top constraints of the wall.
  • Base Constraint:Ground Floor, Top constraint is up to level: First Floor.
  • Repeat Same Process for internal wall.

a. Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected.

ANSWER: The primary benefit of connecting walls to the associated levels rather than keeping them unconnected is that when there is a need to change the height of the storey /building we can do so by simply changing the height of the connected level, instead of having to change the height of all the walls individually which is not only time consuming but also has some risk of error associated with it.

b. Which option is convenient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?

ANSWER: I personally find the height option of modelling the walls more convinent as it creates the wall above the datum level and there is more clarity regarding the visibality and constraints associated with the walls.

RESULT:

It Was Successfully illustrated how to edit materials and thickness of walls from the properties browser. The Constraints Associated with the walls were also explained.

3) Copy the model elements ( wall, floor ) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level . Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align
elements to a different level.

AIM: To Copy the model elements at ground floor level and paste is aligned to first floor using the modify tab.

INTRODUCTION: The procedure to Copy the model elements at ground floor level and paste is aligned to first floor using the modify tab, in revit,is illustrated in detail and the final result is given.

PROCEDURE:

  • Go to project browser>Floor Plans> Ground Floor.
  • Select the entire model.
  • In the Modify panel, Click on Copy to Clipboard icon.
  • From the project browser>First Floor.
  • In the Modify panel,Click on arrow besides paste icon.
  • Select aligned to Selected levels option.
  • In the Select levels dialog box, Select First Floor.
  • The model is Copied to the first floor level.

RESULT:

It was Successfully illustrated how to copy the model elements at ground floor level and paste is aligned to first floor.

4) Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms.

a. Living Room/ Drawing Room ( 15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room ( 9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room ( 10’ X 12’ )
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’)

The above are for examples. You can use them or use your measured entities to create your model based on your layout. You may include entry walkway, Patios or Guest rooms based on your creativity and purpose of modeling. Convert units if you are using metric system.

AIM: To use interior partion walls to create separate units within the residential unit.

INTRODUCTION: The procedure of how to create seprate rooms within the residential unit in Revit is explained in detail and the final result is given.

  • Select the Desired type of light.
  • Again repeat the above process to load other components to the model.
  • Go to project browser.
  • Click on Family.
  • Click on Lighting Fixtures.
  • There we can see recently Loaded Components.
  • Select the element and drag it to the desired location to create a light instance.
  • Repeate the Same process for creating all other instances in the model.
  • Save the Project.
  • Go to View> 3D View drop down list> Camera option.
  • Set the Camera in a suitable Position to get the required view.
  • Change Visual Style to realistic.
  • Rename the View window as Respectively.(Living and Dining Room View, Kitchen, BedRoom 1, BedRoom 2, Toilet).
