Creating Levels, Grids, Layout and model elements for a residential unit using REVIT
1)BIM:
BIM stands for Building Information Modeling and is a workflow process. It’s based around models used for the planning, design, construction, and management of building and infrastructure projects. BIM software is used to model and optimize projects by planning, designing, building, and operating BIM models. BIM models are virtualizations of a project from concept to completion and on through its entire lifecycle. By using BIM, such projects can be completed more efficiently and economically, and with less environmental impact.
FEATURES OF BIM:
- Easy access to information
BIM is a physical representation of the physical and functional characteristics of the building process, that provides every minute detail of the project. Every stakeholder makes their discipline-specific input to make it a comprehensive shared information resource about the structure. One can easily access the right information at the right time that provides a reliable basis for decision making during a structure’s entire lifecycle.
- Making the process more extensive
CAD software enable users to work accurately in 3 dimensions- length, breadth and depth. However, BIM Modeling services providers, are allowed to work in five dimensions, time and cost being the additional dimensions. They are thus able to produce accurate cost and material estimates and precise time schedules of the project even as the design is being developed.
- More comprehensive overview of the project
BIM models not only present 3D geometric view of the structure, they provide a more comprehensive overview of the entire building process. It covers every component of this process from geometrical aspect of the design to spatial relationships, from light analysis to provision of various services, from topographical information to quantities or properties of building components, and so on.
- Lifelike views
BIM design tools allow you to obtain various views from a building model and produce high-quality, accurate drawings. These views are based on a single definition of each object and thus gives a more realistic and accurate idea of the final structure.
The process used by reputed providers of BIM Modeling services is very revolutionary and path-breaking. It’s quite complex in nature, but can make the entire system very simple and consistent. The key lies in implementing BIM across all the disciplines and stages of a project to make full use of its potential.
Benefits of using BIM over 2D CAD tools.
BIM allows you to bring all your designs, including CAD models, into a single database. Using the cloud, BIM provides access to this database to all project members. You'll all work on the same models, which allows for quick changes as needed. When used correctly, BIM helps the entire team visualise the project.
2) Understand the concept of Categories, Families, Elements, Instances in Revit. Go to Insert Tab, choose a category. Pick a family and element. Understand the instances and insert it to Revit model
Category
A category is a group of elements that you use to model or document a building design.
Category is used to classify elements. The element category determines certain behaviors. For example, all elements in the same category can be included in the same schedule. Elements have parameters based on their categories. Categories are also used for controlling visibility and graphical appearance in Revit
Go to Inset tab>Load autodesk family ,families are grouped & sorted by category

FAMILIES:
The simple definition for families in Revit is that it is a group of components used to build a model, for example, walls, windows, stairs, doors, bathrooms, fixtures, showers, etc., with a common set of properties, or parameters, and a related graphical representation.

ELEMENTS:
Elements in Revit are also referred to as families. The family contains the geometric definition of the element and the parameters used by the element. Each instance of an element is defined and controlled by the family. Model elements represent the actual 3D geometry of the building

INSTANCE:
An item from a catalog that is installed in your facility where the properties for that asset are unique to its installation
3) Setting up a Project – Open a project file with architectural template. Save the file with appropriate name. Set up the project units to Imperial / Metric based on your convenience of modelling. Complete the project information under Manage tab. Set up the maximum backups for project file to 3
Open revit software & slect the architectural template
Step 1:
Save the file with appropriate name
open file tab>svae as> project
saved the project as week 2 question 3

Step 2:
Go to manage tab ,select the project information icon & edit the project information

Step 3:
Click file>save as>project>options
Give maximum backups 3 & select ok

4) Understand the concept of Levels and Grids. Follow the naming and conventions. Create the following Levels: ( Convert to metric equivalents if metric is your units)
Ground Floor @ 0’
First Floor @ 10’
Second Floor @ 20’
Roof @ 30’
Grids Transverse Grids A, B,C,D, E @ 10’ spacing
Longitudinal Grids from 1 to 10 @ 20’ spacing
Click the elevation option in the project browser & give enter
Rename level 1 as ground floor & level 2 as first floor
To create second floor & roof go to Architectural tab>level>pick line & give an offset of 10'_0" give enter
Now click the existing level ,now another 2 levels are created rename it

Double click the first floor under the project browser
To create grids go to Architectural tab & select grid icon ,then using line option grid line is created

Now give an offset of 10'-0" & select the existing grids to create gridsA,B,C,D,E

Now to create longitudinal grid upto from 1 to 10 at spacing 20' go to Architectural tab select grid ,now create a longitudinal grid & offset the create line to 20'
5) 3D modelling of residential unit – From looking at your house / or a place you aspire. Create a conceptual layout of the residential unit. You can measure using a tape or
you can access your residential plan to create a similar layout.
AIM:
To create the conceptual layout of residential unit in revit
PROCEDURE:
Residential layout of standard dimensions are created

Visibility of the building is shaded
Dimensions are mentioned using Annotate>Linear or Aligned

6) In the layout created draft the level of details you are planning to include – Dimensions of room, components you plan to add in the residential unit.
Residential layout to the standard dimension is created.
Visibility of the building is shaded
Dimensions are mentioned using Annotate>Linear or Aligned

Doors are created at the required places

Windows are created at the required places

Now the layout is changed to 3D view

RESULT:
Dimensions are created successfully
7) Identify the residential model elements such as Door, Windows, Tables, Chair, Couch, Bed, Lamps from the library and insert them to the model . Save the project for use for Assignment 3
AIM:
To place Door, Windows, Tables, Chair, Couch, Bed, Lamps
PROCEDURE:
Go to Insert tab>load autodesk family >place the furmitures

RESULT:
Furnitures where placed successfully
