creating a 3D or Part body in Surface workbench using Catia V5 Software.
AIM: To create a 3D or Part body in Surface workbench using Catia V5 Software.
PROCEDURE FOR CREATING A SKITCH :
- Open Catia V5 software and go to File-New-Part (Select: Create a geometrical set)
- Create a point at the centre axis with co-ordinates X=0, Y=0 & Z=0.
- Go to Toolbar-Insert-Sketcher -Positioned sketch.
- In Sketcher Positioning select YZ-plane and in projecting point select centre point of the origin.
- Sketch the geometry with Profile toolbar.
- Profile Toolbar: The commands located in this toolbar allows you to create simple geometries (rectangle, circle, line etc.) and more complex geometries (profile, spline etc.)
- Operation Toolbar: Once a profile is created, it can be modified using commands such as trim, mirror, chamfer etc.
- Constraint Toolbar: Profiles may be constrained with dimensional (distances, angles, radius, tangents etc.)
- Check for sketch solving status it must be iso-constrained.
- Now check for Sketch Analysis. There should be no warning and any sign of errors.
- The specification Tree is displayed on the left side of the screen while you are working.
- Provides access to the history of how a part was constructed and shows the product structure.
- Product entities can be selected from the specification tree or in the geometry area.
- Parts can be modified by selecting them from the Specification Tree.
- Solid parts are stored in the Part Body branch of the Part Tree.
- Save the 2D sketch by going to File-Save As with appropriate name.

NAVIGATION CONTROL IN CATIA:
- Click wheel and move mouse to PAN
- Click wheel and Right and move mouse to rotate.
- Click Wheel and right Release right and move mouse to Zoom.
COMMANDS IN SURFACE WORK BENCH: -
EXTRUDE: -
- Select the Profile to be extruded.
-
select a line to take its orientation as the extrusion direction or a plane to take its normal as extrusion direction.
You can also specify the direction by means of X, Y, Z vector components by using the contextual menu
on the Direction field. - Define the Extrusion Limits for Limit 1 and Limit 2.
- Dimension: enter length values or use the graphic manipulators to define the start and end limits of the extrusion.

OFFSET: -
Creating Offset Surfaces The Offset tool is used to create a surface that is at an offset distance from a reference surface. To do so, choose the Offset tool from the Surfaces toolbar. The Offset Surface Definition dialog box is displayed, and to select a reference surface. Select the reference surface from the geometry area and specify the offset value in the Offset spinner. Choose the Reverse Direction button available in the dialog box to reverse the offset direction. The Both sides check box is selected to create the offset surface on both sides of the reference surface. The Repeat object after OK check box is used to create multiple offset surfaces. Select the Repeat object after OK check box and exit the Offset Surface Definition dialog box.

SPLIT: -
The Split tool is used to split a surface or a wireframe element using a cutting element. A wireframe element can be split using a point, another wireframe element, or a surface. A surface can be split using another surface or a wireframe element.

TRIM: -
The Trim tool allows you to trim two intersecting surfaces or curves with respect to each other. When you invoke this tool, the Trim Definition dialog box will be displayed. Choose a surface as the first element and the other surface as the second element. One side of each surface will be displayed as transparent. You can choose the Other side button to reverse the sides of surfaces to be trimmed.

JOIN: -
The Join tool is used to join two adjacent surfaces or two adjacent curves. Choose Join button from the Operation toolbar; the Join Definition dialog box is displayed. select the elements (curves or surfaces) to be joined. Select the elements that you need to join. Remember that there should not be a large gap between the entities to be joined. Choose the OK button from the Join Definition dialog box to complete the join operation. The surfaces or curves that are joined together will behave as a single entity
