Challenge

Challenge 2- Comparing the performance of three types of beams under bending load.

AIM / OBJECTIVE: To compare the performance of 3 types of beams under load.

INTRODUCTION: Comparison of how a structure of different material will act under a constant load has become a necessity. As, it helps us in understanding whether that structure made of a particular material will satisfy the requirements or not.

THEORY: We are considering 3 beams of different structures (cross-sectional area) made of common material (Plain Carbon Steel) with load of 1500N acting uniformly. We are assuming that the beams are cantilever beams.

PROCEDURE:

*First, we model the all structural beams as per the design provided. Extruded by 400mm.

-Rectangular Section:

-I Section:

-C Section:

*Start a new simulation study for each case.

*Static Study is being considered for all the cases.

*Add material as "Plain Carbon Steel" for all the 3 cases.

*We are considering all default parameters of the material.

*For our structures to act as cantilever beam, we need to fix 1 face of the beams using fixed geometry, and apply load on the desired face as required.

-Rectangle Beam:

-I Section Beam:

-C Section Beam:

*Apply mesh to all structures. (default mesh details are considered)

*Now Run the study in all cases to get the desired output in terms of Stress, Displacement and Strain.

-Rectangular Beam:

-I Section Beam:

-C Section Beam:

RESULT:

from the results obtained,

Beams Material Stress Yield Strength Displacement
Rectangular Plain Carbon Steel

Max: 7.628e+06

Min: 2.894e+02

2.206e+02

Min: 1.000e-30

Max: 3.100e-02

I Section Plain Carbon Steel

Max: 2.256+07

Min: 2.973+02

2.206e+02

Min: 1.000e-30

Max: 8.567e-02

C Section Plain Carbon Steel

Max: 3.803e+07

Min: 2.997e+04

2.206e+02

Min: 1.000e-30

Max: 3.330e-01

*We can observe that in all cases the stress acting on the beams are less than the yield strength. When compared to 3 structures, rectangular beam offers a better performance when compared to the other 2 structures.

* If there is constraint of having a lesser mass, then I section is preferred.
