Building a battery pack with 3S4P & 4S3P configuration

For this Challenge, I am following the Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Model: LIR18650 2600mAh datasheet << Click here for the Datasheet

Generic battery model in MATLAB:

For the Generic Battery Model, we required a Battery in MATLAB

from this battery model, we will get 3 output value

1. SoC%

2. Current &

3. Voltage

1. Building a battery pack with 3S4P configuration with generic battery block in MATLAB Simulink

Step1: Open MATLAB and go to Simulink and Click Create a Blank Model

Step 2: Go to browse library and search battery

Step3: Configure the battery according to the datasheet

Step 4: Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) data for Drive Cycle

For Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) data we need Drive Cycle Source

Add Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) data from the .txt file.

Double click on the Drive Cycle Source block

In the block parameter, there is a section of Drive cycle source,

in that select .mat, .xls, .xlsx or .txt file.

to select the .txt file, click on the select file and navigate to the folder where it is saved in your local drive.

In MATLAB to discharge the battery, we have to use a Controlled Current Source

To measure the overall voltage we are using

To display the Values we are using

Powergui Block, make sure Simulation type must be in continuous mode.

Terminology to describe Series and Parallel Connection:

The battery industry specifies the number of cells in series first, followed by the cells placed in parallel. An example is 2s2p. With Li-ion, the parallel strings are always made first; the completed parallel units are then placed in series. Li-ion is a voltage-based system that lends itself well for parallel formation. Combining several cells into a parallel and then adding the units serially reduces complexity in terms of voltages control for pack protection.

Step 6: 3S4P configuration Battery Circuit diagram

Step 6: 4S3P configuration Battery Circuit diagram

Comments:

3S4P configuration 4S3P configuration
As you can see that SOC% for the given UDDS is 27.88% still left. As you can see that SOC% for the same UDDS is 3.5% still left.

For the same 12 number of cells, the 3S4P configuration is more efficient than the 4S3P configuration of the battery pack. Although we get more voltage in the 4S3P configuration than the 3S4P configuration .
