Benchmarking

BENCHMARKING

Companies generally use many methods to build a successful product one of those methods is ‘BENCHMARKING’. It is an Automobile industries technical term for comparison.it is a process of comparing over own company/organization, its operations or processes against the best in the market. Dimensions that are typically measured during benchmarking are cost, quality, and time. Benchmarking is a process for obtaining a ‘BENCHMARK’ (Setting up some personal standards). We can only validate it but cannot be quantified. It is applicable for all the Vehicle manufacturing, IT, Textile, Toy, and other industries with different names. Here in the automobile industry, we use benchmarking before we design a new car/vehicle.

There are two types of benchmarking and they are:

  1. Benchmarking 1: It is a product-level method.
  2. Benchmarking 2: It is a part-level method.

BENCHMARKING 1:

It is a very important step in the product development phase. The intent here is to improve over process, reduce cost, increase profits, customer loyalty, and satisfaction. In this process we will not get instant solutions, it is a step-by-step process.

Steps:

  1. Now determine who you want to benchmark against with accompany, outside an industry, with your company in a different location, within departments in your company, over your own company's past processes.
  2. Determine the new process by comparing it to all the above in step1.
  3. Collect and analyze data.
  4. Create a plan to fill the gaps, also apply those changes, and brainstorm how to go ahead of your competition.
  5. If the new plan is created then monitor those changes and make sure to inform your staff and select good enough candidates for the job.

Here we must get answers to these questions which are very important and acts as inputs for design:

  • what kind of car do we want to design? (For example: hatchback, sedan, SUV, etc)
  • what would be the capacity of the car? (How many people can set in it)
  • what is the budget?
  • which segment we will launch over the vehicle?
  • What are already in the market?
  • what is the customer's expectation of the brand-new car/vehicle from over company?
  • How do we implement over own advancements into the new vehicle?
  • How to make over product to lead the market into the ew era?
  • How this product will make over company profits?

Advantages:

  1. Understand your company's advantages.
  2. The Competitive analysis which leads to improve efficiency.
  3. Monitor performance.
