Benchmarking
1. Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhii is a married man who lives in Bangalore which is a highly crowded city. His Family comprises five members including his wife, a five-year-old boy, his father, and his mother. He visits his native place Madurai which is 500kms away from Bangalore once a month. Also, he will be using his car to commute to his office. His budget falls between 8 to 10 lakhs on road. Please suggest to him options so that he will buy a good car for his family.
Note: Pughazhyendhii is fond of big car
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A 5 SEATER CAR
- While we have outlined safety as the main criteria, knowing how to assess whether a car will be comfortable for five people will be helpful when you are considering cars outside of this list. As mentioned earlier, every car can be said to be a 5-seater car but a good 5-seater car should be able to seat three adults in the rear seats comfortably. Sitting shoulder to shoulder isn’t a major problem as long as all three rear passengers have not been stuffed into the rear seats.
- When evaluating any car, the rear seats should offer comfortable legroom and headroom for the type of passengers you are most likely to travel with in the car. A quick way to see whether a car will have enough space is to see the width of the car from the spec sheet. This should give you a general idea of the kind of space you will have available inside the car.
- The next consideration should be an in-person test of the seats. A wide car with two contoured seats will seat two people comfortably while a flat bench rear seat will keep three people happy while travelling. You should also look at any obstructions in the middle such as poorly placed rear AC vents or a protruding transmission tunnel would make the middle passenger extremely comfortable. You will need to test these factors yourself while driving the car and preferably with the people you will be travelling with.
2. BENCHMARKING :
Benchmarking in the automobile industry structured comparison between similar products, services or processes on some dimensions of performance of cars with features, specifications etc ,.
For example : It can be used to compare the availability delivery of features in a product and in this form often provides the basis of consumer tests and reviews. These look at products and services and provide recommendations based on which is best or some form of ranking amongst competitors. It is particularly useful when comparing not only performance but also practice.
Benchmarking is used by businesses to compare the key metrics of their operations to those of other companies and remain competitive in the market.
Process benchmarking of this kind can operate at several levels:-
- Between similar processes in the same factory or service branch.
- Between different factories or service branches.
- Between different competing organizations.
- Between different competing manufacturers and marketplaces.
- Between different sectors using the same process.
There are two types of Benchmarking:-
Benchmarking I | Benchmarking II |
Involves product level comparison and analysis of vehicle safety comfort, engine efficiency and its performance. | Involves part level comparison focusing on specific BIW components like fender, hood, B Pillar, roof etc and analysing various properties such as matrials type, thickness, no of parts and overall weight. |
