In Automobile industry benchmarking is structured comparison between similar products, services or processes on some dimensions of performance of cars with features, specifications etc,.
For example: Benchmarking allows propective buyers to compare diffrent vehicles of their choice with respect to price, chassis, internal and external dimensions, accessories, power train, safety, EPA classification, seating and manufacturer's warranty.
Process of benchmarking operates at several levels
- Between similar processes in the same factory or service branch.
- Between different factories or service branches.
- Between different competing organizations.
- Between different competing manufacturers and marketplaces.
- Between different sectors using the same process.
There are two types of benchmarking
|
Benchmarking I |
Benchmarking II |
|
Involves product level comparison and analysis of vehicle safety comfort, engine efficiency and its performance. |
Involves part level comparison focusing on specific BIW components like fender, hood, B Pillar, roof etc and analysing various properties such as material type, thickness, no of parts and overall weight. |
Lets sort out the Mr. D. S. Pughazhyendhii case
- His family comprises five members including his wife, 5year old kid, his father & mother.
- He visits his native place Madurai which is 500 kms away from Bangalore once in a month
- He lives in Bangalore city which is highly crowded and commutes to his office daily
- Budget is between 8 to 10 lacs on-road price.
- He is fond of big cars
Lets list the specification of the car based on the requirement of the Mr. D. S. Pughazhyendhii
- 5-7 seater with comfortable seating
- Long range drive performance
- Speed and efficient
- Enough boot space for luggage
- Enough rear leg room space
- As he commutes in Bangalore which is heavily crowded and roads with congested traffic fuel economy is also key factor to save fuel costs.
People usually don't prefer entry level version cars as they lack in some key features.
They normally rely on buying mid level and high level version cars as buying car is not as same as buying vegetables in market.
The most of the above requirments can fulfilld by sub SUVs.

The 1-litre turbo engine is fun to drive and is powerful too. It punches out 99 bhp and that's good enough power for a car that size
Cons:
The 1-litre naturally aspirated engine pushes out 75 bhp and lacks the low end torque punch which the turbo engine has
Doesn't have a sunroof, most of the car offer sunroof and most of the customers like to have sunroof in their car
Apart from the sunroof the car is smaller than kia sonet in height i guess which give it little bit non suv feel.

Conclusion:
From the above comparision Kia sonet 1.2 HTK and Renault kiger looks more spacious but based on reviews they are slight underpowered at the engine performance. This problem can be overcomed on choosing a turbo charged engine which is a next variant of the series that may cost some more thousands for Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhi
From my opinion even though there is some compromise in space a good refined engine and AMT smooth transmission TOYOTA GLANZA S AMT could be a better find for Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhi and his family.
