Benchmarking

BENCHMARKING:

Benchmarking is the continuous process of measuring one’s own product, services and activities against the best level of performance. These best levels of performance may be found either inside one’s own organisation or in other competing organisations or in organisations having similar processes.

TYPES OF BENCHMARKING:

  • Product Benchmarking (Reverse Engineering):Product-oriented reverse engineering is a time-honored technique. Every company buys a competitor's product and dismantles it to see how the features, performance, and other aspects compare to its own. This could be a good place to start if you want to get better.
  • Competitive Benchmarking: Benchmarking in companies has gone beyond product-orientated comparisons in order to incorporate process comparisons with competitors. Process studies of this sort can encompass marketing, finance, human resources, research and development, etc.
  • Process Benchmarking: This is the activity of comparing discrete efficiency and functionality in good analogue business processes versus organisations.
  • Internal Benchmarking: It is a process benchmarking application, by evaluating the performance of similar business units or business processes in a company.
  • Strategic Benchmarking: It differs in its breadth from operational benchmarking. It contributes to a vision of changing organisations. It will develop essential skills that contribute to a persistent competitive edge.
  • Global Benchmarking: The Strategic Benchmarking is extended to include global benchmarking partners, for example: Ford Co. of the United States has benchmarked its payables with Mazda's in Japan and was surprised by the fact that the entire function was controlled by five people vs five hundred.

ELEMENTS FOR EFFECTIVE BENCHMARKING:

  • Overall Impact on Customer Satisfaction.
  • The Extent of Contribution to Raising Competitive Standards.
  • Opportunity to Create the Learning Organisation.
  • Inspirations from Best-in-Class Companies.
  • Strengthening Weaker Processes.
  • Enhancing Knowledge Pool.
  • Bringing in State-of-the-Art Practices.
  • Keeping the Organisation Externally Focused.
  • Extending Employees’ Creative Contributions.

BENCHMARKING AVAILABLE CARS IN MARKET:

Reviewing the given data about Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhii the fallowing factors should be mainly considered in selecting the cars for benchmarking.

  • Always first priority should be given to the SAFETY.
  • Price of the Car.
  • Fuel Economy.
  • Passenger comfort and space availability.
  • Features and Aesthetics.

Step-by-Step Benchmarking:

Benchmarking is a simple, but detailed, five-step process:

  • Choose a product, service, or internal department to benchmark
  • Determine which best-in-class companies you should benchmark against – which organizations you’ll compare your business to
  • Gather information on their internal performance, or metrics
  • Compare the data from both organizations to identify gaps in your company’s performance
  • Adopt the processes and policies in place within the best-in-class performers

Benchmarking will point out what changes will make the most difference, but it’s up to you to actually put them in place.

First Steps:

In order to benchmark anything, you need to have quantitative data available to study. That means breaking down internal processes to calculate performance metrics. Quantify everything, because only quantifiable information can be accurately compared.

Key Benifits:

In addition to helping companies become more efficient and profitable, benchmarking has other benefits, too, such as:

  • Improving employee understanding of cost structures and internal processes
  • Encouraging team-building and cooperation in the interests of becoming more competitive
  • Enhancing familiarity with key performance metrics and opportunities for improvement company-wide

In essence, benchmarking helps employees understand how one small piece of a company’s processes or products can be the key to major success, just as one employee’s contributions can lead to a big win.
