Assignment 5-RADIOSS Interfaces & Study of Effect of Notches Challenge

Objective:

  • Compare the behavior of Type 7 and Type 11 contacts.
  • Effect of notches on the energy and forces

Model Set-Up and cases:

  • Crush tube model, Constrained at the one with DOF 12456, Initial velocity =-13.3m/s. and Rigid wall at the other end

Cases:

1.Run the crash tube model as it is.

2.Change the Inacti=6 and run.

3.Create the type 11 contact and run.

4.Remove both notches and remove boundary condition on rigid body node then run.

5.Create a new notch in the middle, select the whole section and run.

6.Create a new notch with nodes only from opposing 2 faces and run.

Graphs and Results:

Observations:.

  • In Case 02, Inacti=6 effect only if there is initial penetration in the model, it will reduce the gap to remove penetrations. There is no change in Internal energy, contact energy and rigid wall force compare to case 01.
  • In Case 03, Type11 contact, edge-to-edge contact is used. There is very little rigid wall force due to the edges of the crash tube are contacting with a rigid wall so the reaction force from the wall is only on the edges and it is very less.
  • In case 04, due to the removal of notches in the crash tube stiffness of the model is a little reduced. So Rigid wall force is slightly reduced compared to Case01.

  • In case 05, Internal energy and Contact energies are the same. But there is a slight decrease in rigid wall force due to a little increase of stiffness in the crash tube by an added notch.
  • In case 06, also Internal energy and Contact energies are the same. But the noticeable reduction of Rigid wall force is due to added notches only at the flange region of both sides. The stiffness of the model is increased more than in case 05.

  • In case04, due to the removal of notches, stiffness is reduced in the model it results in more strain energy concentration near the contact region.

  • In Case05 and Case 06, the addition of notches increased the stiffness of the models and good strain distribution.
