Assignment 2

Answer1:-

The E value and rho value as checked by the given model property, we get it as

E= 210000

Rho= 0.0078

So, c = `root`E/rho

On solving we get, c = 5188 mm/ms

Answer 2:-

The time taken by a wave to travel the rail of 1000 mm is calculated using

T=l/c

i.e. T= 1000/5188

thus T= 0.1927 ms

Answer 3:-

Time for sound to travel the length of rail is 0.1927 ms

Answer4:-

Edited engine file is attached below

Answer 5:-

To set the frequency of animation steps, firstly we have to calculate it:-

For 20 animations throughout the analysis = 0.1927/20 = .009635

Answer 6:-

Print/- 10 need not be changed because it is set as required.

Answer 7:-

Housing

Objective:

To mesh the housing containing hub and cover using 3D Tetra-mesh.

Tools used:-

  • 2D mesh
  • Quick edit
  • Quick tetra-mesh
  • Distance
  • Volume tetra-mesh
  • Check elements

Procedure followed:-

Import the given geometry.

Geometry cleanup to be done if it is required. Now mesh part individually. In our case I am going through the hub primarily.

Performing tetra mesh using tetra-mesh command. While performing an error occurred that the component is not enclosed. So for this type of components I am performing quick tetra-mesh.

View – browser – hyper-mesh – utility. Performing quick tetra-mesh through this way and keeping the tet size as 5 mm

Now check for any discrepancy in the mesh like tet collapse. The mesh obtained has some failures so performing elemental cleanup. And then again checking for tet collapse. It is found that now the mesh is perfect.

Post hub, perform 3D mesh for cover part. For this part I am doing volume tetramesh.

Prior to performing volume tetra-mesh , set tetra-mesh parameters so that to obtain perfect 3D mesh in one go.

Conclusion:-

The final 3D mesh obtained is as follows without any deformity and as per required quality criteria.

Arm bracket

Objective:

To mesh the Arm bracket containing base, boss and straight and curve arm using 3D Hexa-mesh.

Tools used:-

  • Solid map
  • Distance
  • Spin
  • 3D Element offset
  • Linear solid
  • Solid mesh
  • Check elements
  • Circumcentre
  • Organize
  • Project

Procedure followed:-

Import the geometry

Starting with base, 2D mesh the face of the base.

Now using element offset (3D – Element offset) offset the elements obtained through 2D mesh along the geometry (Base). Select elements to offset, select the surface along which the elements needs to be off-setted, also select the no of layers to be off-setted along the geometry and the thickness of the actual base component.

Thickness in our comp is 25 mm and the layers to be obtained is set as 5 layers.

Post base now its the arm curve which need to be 3D meshed using Hexa-mesh. For performing the 3D meshing to the arm curve the following steps are performed. Extract faces of the base in L shaped component to be spin along the arm curve. Now select the elements which needs to be spin, select nodes along which the elements will spin also the base point to be selected, no of layers to be set in between the faces of the arm curve and the angle of spin is to be set to perform the meshing along the Arm curve. The 3D mesh obtained for the arm curve is as follows:

After arm curve straight arm is to be meshed. To mesh the straight arm the linear solid command is used. The external face of the straight arm is meshed using 2D mesh and the point to be noted that the elements in the face of the arm curve must match the elements of the arm curve in numbers, so that while performing liner solid meshing there will be no discrepancy. Now the elements on both the faces of the arm curve and the straight curve are selected, post which the nodes along which the alignment will take place is to be selected. After selecting the required command for linear solid mesh the command is performed. The mesh obtained from the linear solid along the straight arm is as follows:

Finally the turn for boss has come. For boss, the surface is 2D meshed and then that 2D elements are mapped using solid map along lines. The final mesh obtained post solid mapping is cropped below.

Conclusion:

Thus the final 3D Hexa-mesh obtained after performing the above processes are attached below.
