Assignment 1

01) Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with a brief description.

  1. Acoustics

In this module of acoustic modelling, GT suite builds models capable of solving and analyzing a signal in the particular time domain and then transforming it to the corresponding frequency domain.

ii. AC and Waste heat recovery

As the name suggest this module is for the analysis of the refrigeration system, which basically includes two-phase refrigerants as working fluids. Heat pump or Air conditioning system along with the recovery of heat from high-temperature exhaust gas (heat recovery systems) is the application of this module.

iii. Exhaust Aftertreatment

Exhaust Aftertreatment system module deals with the system concerned with the exhaust systems. This module is responsible for modelling various after treatment models like Three-way catalytic converter, Diesel and gasoline filters, selective catalytic reduction, lean NOx trap etc. which are essential components to control the emissions from the engine.

iv. Cooling and thermal management system

The wide variety of thermal or heat-related issues and disciplines like engine durability, cabin heating and cooling, component sizing, emissions etc. are addressed in this module of cooling and thermal management systems. Radiators, pumps and fans, intercooler, oil, and transmission circuits etc. are some subsystems of this module.

v. Crank train and engine block dynamics

This module helps in building the IC engine, to help us analyze the engine block vibrations and crank train dynamics.

vi. Engine Performance and Application

A wide range of issues like the performance evaluation related to engine and vehicles are addressed in this module. Since the module is designed for both steady and transient simulations this can be used for engine and powertrain controls.

vii. Fuel Injection Application

This module of GT suite is capable of modelling fuel injection and hydraulic components and their coupled systems. Common fuel injection methods like common rail and unit pump systems, along with alternate fuels can be modelled here.

viii.Gear, Chain, and Belt Drives Applications

The dynamic analysis of the power train system which transfers the mechanical power produced is being analyzed in this module. Detailed dynamics of the system including noise, vibrations and transmissions, durability characteristics are addressed here.

ix. Lubrication systems

Lubrication system which plays an important part in engines is being modelled with the help of 1D CFD solutions. Here we predict the flow rate and pressure distribution throughout the system. Studies like resonance and pump dynamics are also addressed in this module. This system of lubrication can be coupled with other engine models like cooling systems.

x.Optimization

Optimization is the practice of maximizing or minimizing a model’s outputs by systematically replacing one or input variables. The automatic iterative optimizer in this module runs the models for each of the given inputs and evaluated the corresponding outputs.

xi.Valvetrain systems

GT Suite provides several tools to analyze and design the IC engine valvetrains. Valve trains systems including camshafts along with its connected parts like joint, spring and damper can be modelled here. 2D and 3D libraries, general kinematics library helps in modelling if multi-body dynamics of the systems.

xii.Vehicle Driveline and HEV Application

This module of GT helps in designing the driveline of an automobile. Several standard driveline models along with components and connections are stored in the GT library.

4.Problem:

Given

  • The diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm
  • Length of the CAC= 1000 mm
  • Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC
  • Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C
    • Calculate the total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC)
    • Calculate pressure drop across CAC
  • total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC) = 8.73kW
  • pressure drop across CAC = 0.0840 bar
