ODD SHAPED ENCLOSURE BY USING NX-CAD

ODD SHAPED ENCLOSURE BY USING NX-CAD

  • Objective:
  1. The main objective of this project is to create an odd-shaped enclosure sheet metal part from a solid body and get familiar of advanced sheet metal features available in NX CAD.
  2. To get knowledge of how to apply these features and tools by using software thereby creating complex sheet metal parts.
  • Introduction:

In this project I have created an odd-shaped enclosure sheet metal part by wrapping it around a solid part, for that, I have used NX-CAD PLM Software version 10.0. I have explained all the tools and features which are used in this sheet metal part modeling such as tab, flanges, holes, and some of the advanced features such as sheet metal from a solid body. This feature allows us to create a sheet metal part directly from a solid body. Basically, NX-CAD software can be used for both solid modeling as well as sheet metal modeling but the features which it provides for sheet metal are very handy and feasible to use for the design of complex sheet metal parts.

NX-CAD is a software developed by Siemens, it is a very powerful tool with parametric modeling features for ease and accuracy to model your parts, Siemens NX software is a flexible and powerful integrated solution that helps you deliver better products faster and more efficiently. NX delivers the next generation of design, simulation, and manufacturing solutions that enable companies to realize the value of the digital twin.

Design Methodology of odd-shaped enclosure :

To start with our sheet metal part design first open the NX-CAD software and select the sheet metal as our working environment.

In this project first we have to create a solid part model which we will use further to convert this solid part into sheet metal, this can be done by using solid model tools such as extrude in NX-CAD.

Features use for Enclosure :

  • Sketch This is the basic or common feature used in any type of modeling but it plays a vital role as it is the foundation of our part model. NX-CAD provides a number of sketch entities and tools for creating sketches such as line, arc, rectangle, spline, circle, ellipse, polygon, etc.

  • Extrude: This is a solid modeling tool that is used to create a solid feature by extruding a sketch profile along a given direction thereby adding volume to the extruded part.

  • Sheet metal from solid: This is an advanced feature provided by NX-CAD, this feature creates a sheet metal part from a solid part by wraping it and taking shape of the planar faces of the solid.

  • Flange : This adds a flange along a face at an angle we can change the angle value by providing a bend between a face, this is a very handy feature to create flanges as it propel the bend values which are required to create a flange.

  • Jog : This feature is used to lift the material on one side of the sketch and create a bend between the two sides.

  • Unbend : It is used to create a flat sheet of our sheet metal model, it does by unbending the bend and material adjacent to the bend.

  • Bead : It lifts material along a contour of the sketch thereby acting like a stamping tool.

  • Holes : This feature is used to create holes of the required diameter on the sheet metal face by selecting the planar face on which we want holes and then defining points for the hole.

  • Rebend : It again restores the bends which were given to the model previously along with any other features added to the model after unbend.

  • Flat Pattern: This feature is used to create a flat pattern from a sheet metal i.e it converts the 3D model into 2D which can be used in drafting a 2D view of the model.

Different views of the odd-shaped enclosure

  • Front view

  • Top view

  • Side view

  • Isometric view

  • Flat pattern view

Conclusion: Hence, I have completed successfully the modeling of the odd-shaped enclosure by using NX-CAD and have come by the use and application of advanced sheet metal tools for the generation of complex parts using NX-CAD.
