Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design
1. Title of the project
The design of casing using Siemens NX Cad software.
2. Objective
To understand the procedures used in the design of casing using Siemens NX CAD software.
3. Introduction
The modern manufacturing environment can be characterized by the paradigm of delivering products of increasing variety, smaller batches and higher quality in the context of increasing global competition. With dramatic changes in computing power and wider availability of software tools for design and production, engineers are now using Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) systems to automate their design and production processes.
NX is one of the world’s most advanced and tightly integrated CAD/CAM/CAE product development solution which h simplifies complex product designs, thus speeding up the process of introducing products to the market. Designs need to contain only essential functional features and care needs to be taken to make the design manufacturable using cheaper manufacturing processes and with less scrap and rejections. This will not only male the designs cost effective but also greener along with getting them to market faster.
This project is a step-by-step approach to design the sheet metal casing using Siemens NX CAD (student edition) software. It is prepared with the self-guiding tutorial by the Skill Lync as a part of my certification course program.
4. Design Methodology
The 3D design of sheet metal casing is done using Siemens NX CAD Students edition software. The methodology followed in the project is as follows:

5. Description
The features used in design are described below.
5.1 Sketch
In NX, create sketch by choosing Sketch in Home toolbar. The screen will display the sketch options. You can choose the Sketch Plane, direction of sketching and type of plane for sketching. Here choose the XC-YC plane and click OK. The sketch plane will appear and the X-Y directions will be marked. This is the basic sketch window.
5.2 Tab
It creates a base feature by extruding a sketch along a vector by a thickness value or add material to a planar face. Additional planar selections can be added to generate bends as a part of the base feature.
5.3 Normal Cut out
This tool is to cuts material by projecting a sketch onto the model and then cutting perpendicular to the faces intersected by the projection.
5.4 Blend
This tool is to bend material on one side of a sketch and adds a bend between the two sides.
5.5 Flange
This tool is to adds a flat flange at an angle to a planar face and adds a bend between the two.
5.6 Break Corners
This tool is to chamfers a sharp corner of a tab or flange.
5.7 Unbend
This tool is to flattens a bend and the material adjacent to the bend.
5.8 Hole
This tool is to adds a hole to one or more solid bodies in a part or assembly with options for counterbored, countersunk and threaded.
5.9 Dimple
This tool is to lifts an area of the model inside a sketch that simulated a stamping tool.
5.10 Studio Spline
This tool dynamically creates and edits splines by dragging defining points and assigning slope or curvature constraints at defining points.
5.11 Bead
It lifts material along the contour of a sketch that simulated a stamping tool.
5.12 Rebend
It restores an unbend feature to its previous bent state, along with any features added after the unbend feature.
5.13 Flat Pattern
It creates a flat pattern feature from the formed sheet metal part.
5.14 Drafting
It lets you create drawings, views, geometry, dimensions and drafting annotations necessary for the completions as well as understanding of an industrial drawing.

6. Conclusion
This project exists as a prime example of how NX CAD can be used to create and optimize a 3D design by creating parametric assemblies and models that can then be easily made into several iterations. It allows integrating design constructional knowledge in one coherent model. Its modern tool that supports an engineer work.
