Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design
- TITLE
Casing Design
- OBJECTIVE
To design a case in NX Cad on sheet metal workbench using the required tools and features
- INTRODUCTION
NX Cad
NX formerly known as unigraphics is one of the world’s most advanced and tightly integrated CAD/CAM/CAE product development solution. The software has powerful hybrid modeling capabilities by integrating constraint based feature modeling and explicit geometric modeling.
Sheet Metal (SM)
Sheet metal is available in flat pieces or coiled strips that originate from many different metals such as aluminum, brass, copper, steel, tin, nickel, or titanium. It is formed into thin, flat pieces and is one of the most basic materials used in metalworking thanks to its malleable properties that enable it to be cut and bent into a multitude of shapes. Perhaps without realizing it, we are surrounded by a myriad of common objects that are fabricated from sheet metal: from automotive bodies to aerospace fuselages and wings, up to medical tables, sinks, roofs of buildings, and machinery.
There is a significant variation in the thickness of sheet metal; the thinnest sheets are referred to as foil or leaf, and pieces with a thickness greater than 6 mm (0.25 in) are considered plate.
- DESIGN METHODOLOGY

DESCRIPTION
Tab
It is a base feature that forms by extruding the sketch along a vector by providing thickness or adds material to a plane face.
Normal cutout
It cuts the model perpendicular to the sketch
Bend
It modifies the model by bending the material on one side of a sketch line by adding a bend between two sides
Flange
It adds a flat flange on basis of edges at an angle to a planar face and adds bend between them
Break Corner
It rounds sharp corner at edges
Unbend
It flattens a bend and material adjacent to the bend
Mirror
It is used to create same features or sketches on basis of plane or sketch
Hole
It creates a hole on basis of circle created
Dimple
It lifts an area along the contour of a sketch that forms a stamping tool
Bead
It lifts a material along the contour of a sketch that forms a stamping tool
Rebend
It restores a bend
Flat pattern
It creates a flattened pattern form the formed sheet metal part

7. CONCLUSION
Thus, a casing model was created using SIEMENS NX in the sheet metal workbench using required features. A draft was created from the flat form.
