Layers of 5G Architecture

The fifth generation (5G) mobile network is a new, revolutionary wireless standard that builds upon the success of 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. It offers peak data speeds of up to 20 Gigabits per second (Gbps) and average data rates of 100+ Megabits per second (Mbps).

5G utilizes orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) encoding, with channels linked between 100 and 800 MHz. Its capabilities extend beyond mobile communication and support various services, including critical/non-critical, voice/non-voice, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

In this article, we will discuss 5G protocol layers. By reading these, you will thoroughly grasp the various 5G layer architectures.

5G Architecture – What is it?

5G architecture is a newer, more sophisticated mobile network design allowing quicker data transmission, lower latency, and higher connection dependability.

It is intended to offer faster data speeds and more coverage than existing 4G networks and enable novel use cases such as huge machine-type communications, ultra-reliable low-latency communications, and mission-critical applications.

The core network of 5G architecture comprises radio access networks, transport networks, cloud networks, and core networks. These networks are linked and offer the infrastructure required for 5G services.

Difference Between 4G and 5G Architecture

Below, we will compare the differences between 4G and 5G network architecture in a table format.

differences between 4G and 5G network architecture

The 5 Layers of 5G Architecture

Followings are 5 different layers in 5G architecture that includes:

  • The service Data Adaptation Protocol (SDAP) layer is a 5G architecture protocol that enables the adaptation of services and data to different applications. It provides a framework for exchanging control and user data between the user equipment and the network, ensuring the data is suitable for various applications.

SDAP also provides a mechanism for the network to adjust parameters according to the quality of service requirements dynamically.

  • Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) layer is important to 5G architecture. It provides secure and reliable end-to-end user plane data transmission, enables efficient header compression, and supports the data plane QoS.

It also provides encryption and integrity protection for the user data. PDCP helps increase the data rate, reduce latency, and provide a seamless user experience.

  • Radio Link Control (RLC) layer is an important layer in 5G architecture responsible for the reliable transfer of data packets between the user equipment and the base station.

It provides segmentation and reassembly of large data blocks and provides error control, flow control, and congestion control. It also manages the retransmission of data if required.

  • Medium Access Control (MAC) layer in 5G architecture manages how devices access the shared medium in a wireless network. It coordinates the uplink and downlink traffic between devices, allocates resources, and ensures no device monopolises the medium. It also offers QoS, error correction, and authentication for users.
  • The Physical Layer (PHY) is the bottom layer of 5G architecture. It is responsible for providing services related to the transmission of electronic signals over physical media. It is responsible for modulating and demodulating radio signals and correcting errors. PHY also handles the physical interface and media access control.

Three Layers of 5G Mobile Network

Three Layers of 5G Mobile Network

There are 3 5G mobile network layers: Radio Access Network (RAN), Core Network, and Network Management. Each layer is responsible for different functions and plays a vital role in the 5G mobile network.

  • The initial layer of the 5G mobile network is the Radio Access Network (RAN). This layer handles radio signal reception and transmission to and from the mobile device. This is accomplished by placing base stations (or towers) across the coverage region. A cellular connection connects the base stations to the core network. This layer also connects the mobile user to the core network in a safe manner.
  • The Core Network is the 5G mobile network's second tier. This layer coordinates data flow between the mobile network's different components. This layer includes the packet core, the mobility management entity, the service gateway, and the policy and pricing rules function.
  • The third layer of the 5G mobile network is Network Management, which is in charge of network performance management. It contributes to the network's seamless and efficient operation. This layer also includes tools for monitoring network performance, resolving difficulties, and making network modifications or upgrades.

These three layers of the 5G mobile network work together to give consumers a secure and dependable connection. 5G mobile networks, which use cutting-edge technology, can deliver faster speeds and more dependable connections than ever before.

Conclusion

The 5G layer architecture is an important part of the 5G network as it defines the overall architecture of the network and the different components that make it up. By understanding the different layers of the architecture, you can know how the network works and how it can deliver high-speed and low-latency services.

We hope this article has helped you understand the different 5G layer architecture and gain knowledge of 5G networks.
