What is GSM? How this Technology Keeps you Connected

Introduction to GSM Technology

GSM networks are typically divided into two parts:

What Devices Use GSM?

Composition of the Network

The GSM network is made up of four distinct components that work together to operate as a whole: 

  • Mobile device
  • Base station subsystem (BSS) 
  • Network switching subsystem (NSS)
  • Operation and support subsystem (OSS)

The hardware integrates the mobile device into the internet. The subscriber identity module (SIM) card provides identifying information about the mobile user to the network.

The BSS manages communication between the cell phone and the NSS. It is made up of two major parts: 

  • Base Transceiver Station (BTS) 
  • Base Station Controller (BSC)

The BTS contains the equipment that communicates with mobile phones, largely the radio transmitter-receivers and antennas, while the BSC is the intelligence behind it. The base station controller (BSC) communicates with and controls a group of base transceiver stations.

The NSS component of the GSM network architecture, also known as the core network, tracks callers' locations to enable the delivery of cellular services. The NSS is owned by mobile carriers. The NSS is made up of several components, including a mobile switching centre (MSC) and a home location register (HLR). These components perform different functions, such as routing calls and Short Message Services.

  • Multimedia messaging service (MMS)
  • GSM technology is also used for mobile banking, mobile commerce, and location-based services.

Security Concerns with GSM

As the world increasingly relies on wireless technologies for communication, it is important to understand how these systems work and the potential security concerns that come with them. One of the biggest security concerns with GSM is its vulnerability to interception. Because GSM signals are not encrypted by default, they can be fairly easily intercepted by anyone with the right equipment. This can allow eavesdroppers to listen in on conversations or even track a person's movements if their location can be determined from the intercepted signal.

Another potential issue is that GSM networks are centrally controlled, which means that a malicious actor could potentially take over the entire system if they were able to gain access to the central network. This could allow them to intercept and listen in on all communications on the network or even block certain users from accessing it.

Overall, GSM is a relatively secure technology, but there are still some risks associated with it. It's important to be aware of these risks and take steps to protect yourself accordingly.

How to Choose the Right GSM Carrier

There are a few things to consider when choosing a GSM carrier.

  1. Budget: When it comes to wireless service, you generally get what you pay for. The least expensive option may not be the best value if it doesn’t offer the coverage or features you need.
  2. Coverage Area: Make sure the carrier you choose has good coverage in your area. Check their coverage map before you commit to a service plan.
  3. Data Usage: If you plan on using data heavily (streaming video, downloading music, etc.), make sure your carrier has an unlimited data plan that fits your needs. Otherwise, you may end up with a hefty bill at the end of the month.
  4. Other Features: There are other factors to consider beyond cost and coverage when choosing a GSM carrier. What kind of customer service do they offer? Do they have any special deals or promotions? What kinds of phones do they offer?
