Why is an Electric vehicle is Required?

The electric vehicle is basically a vehicle that operates on portable energy sources like battery and traction effort provided by the motor(AC/DC). Most induction motors are used here. Unlike ICE engine-powered vehicles, these EVs do not produce harmful emissions, becoming an eco-friendly transportation mode. However, the electrical energy required for charging the vehicle can be produced from renewable sources as well like solar, wind, hydroelectric, or biogas.

EVs are classified into main categories like AEVs and PHEVs.

AEVs (all-electric vehicles) are powered by electric motors. The electricity is provided by the grid and stored in batteries. They consume no fuel and produce no harmful emissions. It entirely runs only on electricity. It includes Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Fuel cell Electric Vehicles(FCEVs) Whereas in PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) use batteries to power an electric motor and plug into the electric grid for charging, and it also uses an alternative fuel to power the internal combustion engine in case of emergency situations.

The future engineers reply on electric mobility since the potential of electrification is huge and it can bring significant changes in the mobility sector and creates a lot of job opportunities and promotes business, starting from electrical vehicle design, manufacturing, automation, electrical grid, and charging infrastructure. Various opportunities exists related to electro-mobility, to identify charging stations, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, Vehicle to grid technologies, integration of renewable sources, and other service in establishing smart city projects.

Advantages of Electric Vehicles

The operation of electric drive motors runs quieter than internal-combustion engines. The noise emissions from an Electric vehicles(EVs) is very low.

Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions fewer greenhouse gases and other harmful air emissions than traditional gas-powered cars during mobility. If the high-voltage battery of electric vehicle is charged from renewable energy sources then EV becomes more eco-friendly without the emission of greenhouse gases.

Traditional internal combustion engines have dozens of moving parts, with maintenance costs that add up over time.  but electric vehicles require far less ongoing maintenance than gas cars. Because these vehicles contain fewer moving parts, there are simply fewer chances that a given component will wear out.

The power drive train design is completely simple since the vehicle components like  transmission, clutch, mufflers, particulate filters, fuel tank, starter, alternator and spark plugs are not required for electric vehicle.

Electric motors exhibit an excellent torque and output characteristics. They have developed maximum torque from standstill condition. This allows an electric vehicle to accelerate considerably faster than a conventional vehicle with an IC engine producing the same output.

Electric motors shows a high degree of efficiency of up to 96% compared with internal-combustion engines that have an efficiency of 35–40%.

When the vehicle is in braking mode, the motor can also be used as an alternator that produces electricity and charges the battery (regenerative braking).

Using Google maps and other charging station locator applications, EV charging stations are easier to find.

The advancement in battery technology have rapidly developed. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that batteries in every new EVs are designed to last for the expected lifetime of the vehicle. Batteries do wear out so replacement batteries will eventually be required. Most car manufacturers provide warrant for EV batteries around 8 years.

Electric vehicles can help to increase our transportation fuel independence which means EV drivers can produce some or all of the energy needs for their vehicles using renewable sources which promotes energy independence.

Electric vehicles are energy efficient, time efficient, and cheaper over their life, making them a practical solution and perfect replacement to conventional IC engine vehicles.

Disadvantages of Electric Vehicles

The Initial Investment for an electric vehicle is Steep and undesirable compared with conventional IC engine vehicles.

The network of electric charging stations is sparse. Electric fuelling stations are still in the development stages. Finding a charging station in sub-urban and rural areas may be harder.

Electric vehicles have a limited range due to battery size and capacity.

The charging time of battery depending on the battery charge and power source exhibits long duration.  An electric vehicle takes about 4-6 hours and sometimes even a day to fully charge for mobility. There are some kits that can cut the charging time down. But again, that is going to be an additional investment. 

Depending on the usage of battery, batteries of almost all electric vehicles are required to be changed every 3-10 years.

Vast amount of customization and models is available with traditional cars. But in EVs fewer options to customize, analyse and choose the desired aesthetics of your EV
