Traffic Light System Simulation with Stateflow in Simscape

logo

Skill-Lync

In this final blog of our Physical Modeling in Simscape with Simulink & MATLAB series, we’ll implement a traffic light system simulation using MATLAB Stateflow. This example showcases event-driven control logic, making it a perfect case for Simscape for control systems.

This blog is part of Skill-Lync’s Simscape Training, covering Simscape engineering applications through practical simulations.

Understanding Traffic Light System Control Logic

A crossroad traffic signal has two states:

  • State 1 (Green for North-South, Red for East-West)
  • State 2 (Green for East-West, Red for North-South)

Each state remains active for 30 seconds, then transitions to the next.

Building the Stateflow Traffic Light Model

Define States in Stateflow:

  • N_S_Green: North-South lights Green, East-West Red.
  • E_W_Green: East-West lights Green, North-South Red.

Set Transition Conditions:

  • After (30, sec) → Transition to next state.

Use Dashboard Components:

  • Indicator Lamps show signal changes.
  • Graphical Interface enhances Simscape system design.

Simulating the Traffic Light System

Run the Simulation for 150 Seconds:

  • Observe state changes at 30-second intervals.
  • Visualize real-time traffic signal behavior.

Analyze Stateflow Transitions:

  • Traffic lights change states dynamically.
  • Decision-making logic is time-driven.

Conclusion

This blog demonstrated how MATLAB Stateflow is used for event-driven control systems, such as a traffic light simulation.
