Engine Cooling System Simulation in Simscape

Welcome to the Physical Modeling in Simscape with Simulink & MATLAB blog series! In this blog, we will explore an advanced engine cooling system simulation using MATLAB Simscape and understand how various thermal components interact to regulate engine temperature.

Understanding the Engine Cooling System Model 

An engine cooling system consists of multiple interconnected thermal components. The Simulink model we are analyzing includes: 

  • Engine Block – Generates heat that needs to be dissipated. 
  • Oil Pump & Coolant Pump – Circulates fluids to remove heat. 
  • Oil-Coolant Heat Exchanger – Transfers heat between oil and coolant. 
  • Radiator & Fan – Helps cool down the heated coolant using airflow. 

These elements interact dynamically, making physical modeling in Simscape crucial for realistic simulation. 


Implementing a Lookup Table in Simscape 

In this simulation, a 2D lookup table helps determine output values based on two independent variables, such as vehicle speed and fan operation. This technique is commonly used in Simscape mechanical modeling to optimize engine cooling performance. 


Visualizing Simulation Results 

Cylinder Wall Temperature: 

  • The simulation runs for 15,000 seconds, stabilizing the cylinder wall temperature at 95°C. 
  • Simscape Result Explorer helps analyze these values efficiently. 


Using the Simscape Result Explorer: 

Unlike standard Simulink scope outputs, this tool provides in-depth visualization of: 

  • Coolant density variations 
  • Mass flow rate changes 
  • Heat transfer rates in the radiator
