How Long Does it Take to Complete an Engineering Course in Germany?

When you factor in the time needed to study German and the foundation course, it generally takes 4.5 to 5.5 years to complete a German-taught engineering programme in Germany.

  • 6–8 months for a German language course
  • Study abroad program or foundation course: One Year
  • 3.5 to 4 years for a bachelor's programme

Things to Ensure before Applying for an Engineering Course

Applying for an Engineering Course

After completing your schooling, students must enrol in a one-year preparatory course at the Studienkolleg, which typically requires at least a B1 Certificate. This is followed by an exam known as the Aufnamheprufung. A test termed the assessment test concludes the one-year-long introductory session.

The English language and literature subject exams should be passed by students who have completed their A-levels. There is no language component for General Paper.

A student may pursue a bachelor's programme in engineering in English medium if they have completed English language and literacy courses in addition to the other prerequisites. However, there aren't many engineering courses offered in English.

To study in the German medium, the student must pass the B1 level exam. They must complete another 4-6 months of German language instruction to reach the C1 or TestDaF 4 or DSH-2 levels.

Admission Procedure Standardised by Universities in Berlin Germany

  • Enrol in online or in-person German courses to learn German up to the B1 level and prepare for the Zertifikat B1 exam.
  • Submit the necessary university application materials after passing the B1 exam.
  • Apply for your visa after receiving the admissions letter.
  • Request the opening of a blocked account and a letter of no objection.
  • Send the first year's worth of living expenses (10500 Euros approx.) to your blocked account.
  • Visit the German Embassy to pick up your visa and get travel insurance.
  • Make travel plans to Germany.
  • Start studying for your foundation course in Germany by taking your admission exam.
  • If you don't pass the foundation course entrance test, enrol in a German language course there and retry it in 3 to 4 months.

Entry Requirements for Engineering Programs in Germany

The following are the entry requirements for a German-taught engineering bachelor's programme:

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on the SEE test
  • GPA of at least 2.8 in 10+2 or comparable subjects
  • B1-level German language proficiency with a maximum 2-year gap

Germany University Fees

It is exciting to know that many universities in Germany do not require a tuition fee to be paid by students.  Typically, an initial budget of around 22,000 Euros NPR is needed, which includes the first year's living expenses of 10,500 Euros in the form of blocked accounts.

After completing your engineering studies, you are permitted to remain in Germany and find employment. You will be provided an 18-month job search visa as an international student who has completed your studies.

Once you have found a job related to your field of study, you can apply for an EU Blue card that allows you to live and work in Germany for as long as you like.
