Exploring Parametric Design Studies in SolidWorks

logo

Skill-Lync

Parametric design studies are a game-changer in engineering simulation, allowing engineers to optimize designs without repetitive modeling. In this blog, we’ll explore how to set up and run a parametric design study in SolidWorks to optimize a cantilever beam's dimensions, material, and load conditions.

What is a Parametric Design Study?

A parametric design study automates multiple simulations by varying predefined parameters such as length, width, material, or load. This reduces manual effort and ensures you arrive at an optimized design efficiently. SolidWorks simulation training includes robust tools for parametric studies, making it a must-have skill for engineers.

Setting Up a Parametric Design Study

Step 1: Define Parameters

  • Open an existing 3D simulation study of the cantilever beam.
  • Select Design Study > New Study.
  • Add parameters to vary:
  • Length: From 0.5 m to 2 m in 0.5 m steps.
  • Width: From 30 mm to 90 mm in 30 mm steps.
  • Load: From 1000 N to 6000 N in 2000 N steps.
  • Mesh Size: From 4 mm to 6 mm.

Step 2: Set Constraints

  • Add constraints to ensure:
  • Stress remains below 60 N/mm².
  • Factor of safety is greater than 3.

Step 3: Define Goals

  • Set the goal to minimize mass while maintaining the specified constraints.

Step 4: Run the Study

  • Click Run and let SolidWorks iterate through all possible scenarios.
  • The solver will evaluate each scenario and select the optimal design based on the defined goals.

Benefits of Parametric Design Studies

  • Time-Saving: Eliminates repetitive manual setup for multiple simulations.
  • Optimization: Identifies the best design configurations efficiently.
  • Grid Dependency Testing: Varies mesh size to ensure accuracy in results.

In our example, SolidWorks completed 144 simulations to find the best combination of length, width, and material properties for the cantilever beam. The final design met all constraints while minimizing mass, demonstrating the power of parametric studies in CAE simulation with SolidWorks.

Conclusion

Parametric design studies are an invaluable tool for engineers looking to optimize their designs efficiently. By leveraging SolidWorks' advanced simulation features and training from Skill-Lync's CAE simulation course, you can master the art of parametric studies and take your engineering simulations to the next level.
