Creating Rounded Corners & Basic 3D Geometry in Ansys SpaceClaim

logo

Skill-Lync

Welcome to the Additive Manufacturing & 3D Printing with Ansys SpaceClaim blog series! In this blog, we will explore how to create rounded corners and transform 2D sketches into 3D geometry using the Pull Tool in Ansys SpaceClaim for additive manufacturing. Understanding these fundamental tools is essential for precise 3D modeling for 3D printing and additive manufacturing with Ansys SpaceClaim.

Creating Rounded Corners in Ansys SpaceClaim

The Rounded Corner Tool is a vital feature that allows users to create smooth transitions between two intersecting lines by trimming or extending them into a circular arc. Here’s how it works:

  • Select the Rounded Corner Tool from the toolbar.
  • Click on two intersecting lines, and Ansys SpaceClaim will generate an arc preview.
  • Adjust the arc’s radius by entering a specific value. For instance, setting a 2 mm arc results in a less pronounced corner, while a 5 mm arc provides a smoother transition.
  • Repeat the process for all corners to achieve the desired rounded effect.

By mastering this tool, users can improve their designs, ensuring seamless geometries that are suitable for 3D printing with Ansys SpaceClaim.

Creating 3D Geometry from 2D Sketches

Now that we have a refined 2D sketch, let’s transform it into 3D geometry using the Pull Tool:

  • Select the Pull Tool from the workspace.
  • Click on a closed surface area (such as a rectangle or circle) to activate it.
  • Drag the yellow arrow to extrude the shape into 3D. For example, setting the extrusion height to 15 mm creates a solid model of that thickness.
  • Modify the extrusion depth dynamically by typing a precise value and pressing Enter.

This straightforward process enables users to efficiently create and modify 3D geometry, a fundamental skill in Ansys SpaceClaim for 3D printing.

Conclusion

In this blog, we explored how to create rounded corners and convert 2D sketches into 3D models using Ansys SpaceClaim for beginners. Mastering these tools is a crucial step in learning Ansys SpaceClaim for CAD users, designers, and engineers who want to excel in additive manufacturing. Stay tuned for the next blog, where we’ll cover file management, saving, and loading models in Ansys SpaceClaim training.
