Data Extraction and BOQs Using Attributes in AutoCAD

Data extraction using attributes in AutoCAD for civil engineering simplifies the process of generating detailed BOQs, material schedules, and reports. In this blog, we’ll delve into creating attribute-rich blocks and extracting data for project documentation. 

Embedding Attributes for Data Extraction 

Let’s create a block for a bed with detailed attributes to demonstrate data extraction: 

Define Attributes: 

• Use the ATTDEF command to set up fields like Width, Depth, Height, Material, and Cost. 

Example: 

• Tag: Width, Default Value: 1900 mm. 
• Tag: Cost, Default Value: 50,000 INR (set to invisible). 

Create the Block: 

• Combine the bed geometry with defined attributes. 
• Assign a block name like Bed_Type101. 

Insert and Edit Attributes: 

• Insert multiple instances of the bed block and customize attributes like unique references or manufacturing locations using ATTEDIT. 

Extracting Data for BOQs

• Data extraction is a key feature for civil engineers using AutoCAD 2024. Here’s how to extract data from attribute-rich blocks: 

Start Data Extraction: 

• Use the Data Extraction tool under the Insert tab. 
• Create a .dxe file to save the extraction template. 

Select Data Sources: 

• Choose specific blocks or the entire drawing as the data source. 
• Filter for blocks with attributes only. 

Choose Attributes to Extract: 

• Select relevant attributes like Cost, Width, and Material. 

Output Data: 

• Export the data as an Excel file or insert it as a table in your drawing. 
• Example: Create a BOQ listing all bed instances, their dimensions, and costs. 

Practical Example: Managing Furniture Attributes 

For a project with multiple beds: 

• Assign attributes like Brand, Material, and Cost to each bed. 
• Extract data to an Excel sheet for project costing or inventory management. 
• Update attributes directly in the Excel file and sync changes with your AutoCAD drawing. 

Advanced Attribute Management 

Block Attribute Manager: 

• Use the BATTMAN command to manage and edit attribute properties across blocks. 

Visibility Control: 

• Toggle visibility for attributes like Cost or Manufacturing Location using the attribute manager.
