Wiring harness routing & packaging Rules Week 3 Challenge

OBJECTIVE:

1.Download following cad data & define it as Electrical support using Electrical Part design Workbench. Define all the necessary properties. (P clamp)

2.Download following Back shell cad data & define it as Electrical back shell using Electrical Part design Workbench. Define all the necessary properties.

3.Create Following Corrugated tubes & Add them in Catalogue under “Slit COT” family.

SOLUTION:

1. P CLAMP

INTRODUCTION:

P-clamps lock cables and hoses in place and help ensure that machinery, vehicles and equipment keep running. They bracket wires, cables or hoses together mechanically and are fastened securely to an anchor point – usually with a screw or a bolt.

P-Clamp is an Electrical Support equipment which provides support to the wire bundle to remain fixed to the automobile or any components or parts. The wire bundle can enter and exit from any side as it is a bi-directional equipment. So, we need to specify the Entry and Exit points from both the sides. To define the P-Clamp as Electrical Support equipment.

STEP-1:

First download the CAD part and open it using the CATIA V5 software.

STEP-2:

Now we have to define the geometry parameters. In order to define the geometry parameters, we need to navigate to the Part Workbench. Then we need to create points and plains at the entry and exit points and create the base plane . Image mention below.

STEP-3:

Now in order to define the P-Clamp as a Electrical support we have to navigate to the Electrical Part design Workbench. Now using the 'Define support part' option we can define the P-Clamp Entry and Exit points. for that we have to select any one of the two points as our entry point along with the reference plane and then we have to select the second plane and the base plane in the clamp. Click on ok. As the P-Clamp is Bi-directional so we need to define the support two times. image mention below.

and save the part.

And create the catalogue for the P-clamp. image mention below.

2. BACK SHELL

INTRODUCTION:

A backshell is an accessory that mounts to the rear threads of a connector to enhance its operational characteristics. The primary function of a backshell is to provide strain relief, which minimizes stress from the cable, on the junction where the wires terminate to the contacts. Backshells come in a variety of finishes, materials, and angle configurations. For material compatibility and aesthetics, backshells and connectors should have a matching material and finish. And to provide simple cable management, most backshells may be ordered in 45º and 90º angles.

To define the Electrical properties of the backshell.

STEP-1:

First download the 3-D CAD part of the backshell in te.com website and open it using the CATIA V5 software.

STEP-2:

Then define the backshell geometrically in the Catia Part Design Workbench. To do that we have to first assign a mid-point to the bundle connection side face of the backshell and then we also have to assign a mid-point to connector connection side of the backshell , along with that we also have to assign Create an Axis system at the Connector mating side. The axis system should be created at the center of the mating surface. The axis must be defined as defined for the connectors show that it will connect easily. Y- axis is Normal to the mating surface and X-axis is Normal to the locking side. This will allow us to fully define our backshell geometrically. image mention below.

STEP-3:

First we select the define backshell option from the toolbars and then we select the backshell body and click ok. it is the way to define the parts as backshell.

STEP-4:

we select the define backshell connection point option from the toolbars and then we select the backshell body, mid-point for representation, contact face for contact, Y-axis for coincidence and X- axis for orientation and then click on ok. This will fully define our backshell electrically. image mention below.

STEP-5:

Then we select the define bundle connection point option from the toolbars and then we select the backshell body, bundle contact face for representation, mid-point for point, and again bundle contact face for initial condition and then click on ok. image mention below.

And save the file.

And create the catalogue for the backshell. image mention below.

3.CORRUGATED TUBES:

Corrugated Tubes are used as protection coverings for the wire bundle from any type of damages.

STEP-1:

Creating the following corrugated tubes as per the dimensions given in the table and storing in the Slit COT family catalogue document.

Start the Electrical Part Design Workbench in Catia. Select the Define Protection Part option from the toolbars and then select the part name from the feature tree. A Define Protection Part pop-up window will appear where we have to assign the required values of inner diameter, thickness, and bent radius. Click ok. Our desired corrugated tube will be created. image mention below.

1. COT 15mm TUBE:

2. COT 20mm TUBE:

3. COT 35mm TUBE:

4. COT 10mm TUBE:

5. COT 5mm TUBE:

STEP-2:

Create a Catalogue document and adding "Slit COT" as a family and saving the document in our desired folder.

STEP-3:

Then we have to add out model to the "Slit COT" family catalogue that we created.

Do the same for the all other tubes.

CONCLUSION:

From the above challenge we learnt how to define the Electrical support for a P-Clamp and also define its Electrical properties. We also learnt how to Electrical Backshell for a Backshell component and also define its Electrical properties and how to make Corrugated Tubes of different diameters and also save them in the respective families in the Corrugated Tubes catalogues.
