Wiring harness design in CATIA V5 - 3D modeling Week 2 Challenge

AIM: Defining Connectors and Clips using CATIA V5

Objective : Downloading the 3D CAD files form the te.com website and then defining the parts electrically and further creating a catalogue for the components.

Introduction:

A connector is a device(or more precisely, a mating pair of devices, often a plug and a socket) for connecting together two or more wires, cables, or hoses, allowing electricity or fluid to flow but also allowing easy disconnection and reconnection when necessary.

Mounting Clips are used for supporting conduits. These clips are made of High Quality Impact Resistant Polyamide. The mounting clips are stackable and are fixed with the help of screws on to the panel or equipment surface.

Specifications:

Connectors:- 1. Deutsch DT06 – 08SA

2. Tyco 174357-2

Mounting Clip:- 1. Tyco 85229-1

Design Methodology:

1. Deutsch DT06 – 08SA:-

  1. First open the 3D CAD data in Catia and then convert the file format(ex: .igs,.stp) to .CATPart.
  2. Then define the connector geometrically in the Catia Part Design Workbench. To do that we have to first assign a mid-point to the bundle connection side face of the connector and then we also have to assign a mid-point to connector connection side of the connector, along with that we also have to assign an axis system on the mid-point of the connector connection side face. This will allow us to fully define our connector geometrically.
  3. After that start the Electrical Part Design Workbench in Catia to define the connector electrically.
  4. First we select the define connector option from the toolbars and then we select the connector body and also assign the number of terminals to the connector which in this case are 8 terminals.
  5. Then we select the define bundle connection point option from the toolbars and then we select the connector body, bundle contact face for representation, mid-point for point, and again bundle contact face for initial condition and then click on ok.
  6. Lastly we select the define connector connection point option from the toolbars and then we select the connector body, mid-point for representation, contact face for contact, Y-axis for coincidence and X- axis for orientation and then click on ok. This will fully define our connector electrically.
  7. Save the file.

PROPERTIES OF CONNECTORS AND CLIP

After defining the component as Connector in electrical part design, we have to define below properties to the same--

1. Bundle Connection Point:

  • In above image, bundle connection point is shown.
  • This point is located at center of the bundle segment side or wire entry side.
  • This is the point where bundle segment or wire point end when get routed to a connector.
  • This point is known as Bundle Connection Point.
  • At the time of defining bundle connection point, the number of terminals and a face is also provided as an input data.

2. Connector Connection Point:

  • In above image, connector connection point and axis is shown.
  • This point is located at the center of mating face which is used for the connection of one connector to the another connector.
  • So, this point is called as Connector Connection Point.
  • In Connector connection axis system, we have to always ensure that y-axis should be alwyas in the direction of mating axis of all the connectors.
  • And x-axis should be in the diretion of locking mechanism and z-axis should be left-right side of the connector according to the orientation.

3. Cavity Connection Point:

2. Tyco 174357-2 & Tyco 85229-1 :-

  • In above image, cavity connection point and axis is shown.
  • This point is located at the downward side of the connector and this point only applies to the connectors which have the mounting feature for a connector clip.
  • This is the point which is used to define the connetion of a connector to a connector clip for a firm and positive fixing.
  • So, this point is known as Cavity Connection Point.
  • Connector cavity axis system is same as connector connection axis.

After defining properties to a connector, we need to define properties to a clip as below--

CLIP

  • In above image, clip is shown.
  • This clip is used to mount connector on the body, which is known as Connector Cavity or Mounting Clip.
  • There is provision for cavity features in which we have to always ensure that the axis system of a clip is same as the connector cavity axis system.
  • Clips provides a firm and positive fixing to the connectors.
  • Clips are plastic molded parts with mounting features.
