Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

TENSION AND TORSION TEST

OBJECTIVE

To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen in ANSYS Workbench

  • For the tension test,

Displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other end fixed.

  • For the torsion test,

Displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree while keeping the other end fixed.

Find out the Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and Temperature of the specimen for both the tests.

MODEL SETUP

The 3D model of the setup is imported into ANSYS Space Claim. For both Tensile and Torsion test, the specimen is the same. Check for any abnormalities in the Geometry.

MATERIAL ASSINGMENT:

Steel 1006 is assigned to the Specimen

The properties of materials used is shown below

  • Steel 1006 :

MODEL SETUP:

After importing the Geometry, rename the specimen and assign respective materials.

MESHING:

For Tensile Test,

The meshing is done as follows,

  • The whole setup is meshed with Tetrahedron elements with Patch Confirming Algorithm

  • A co-ordinate system is created on the face of the specimen where load is to be applied, and a Sphere of Influence type is assigned with Sphere radius of 22 mm and face element size of 3 mm is assigned to analyse accurately.

  • Another co-ordinate system is created on the face of the specimen where it is fixed, and a Sphere of Influence type is assigned with Sphere radius of 22 mm and face element size of 3 mm is assigned to analyse accurately.

FINAL MESH:

MESH QUALITY:

For Torsion Test,

The meshing is done as follows,

  • The whole setup is meshed with Tetrahedron elements with Patch Confirming Algorithm

  • A co-ordinate system is created on the face of the specimen where load is to be applied, and a Sphere of Influence type is assigned with Sphere radius of 22 mm and element size of 3 mm is assigned to analyse accurately.

  • Another co-ordinate system is created on the face of the specimen where it is fixed, and a Sphere of Influence type is assigned with Sphere radius of 22 mm and face element size of 3 mm is assigned to analyse accurately.

  • A Face sizing is assigned for the centre face of the specimen, and a Sphere of Influence type is assigned with Sphere radius of 8 mm and face element size of 1 mm is assigned to analyse accurately.

  • A Face sizing of 1.5 mm is selected for the faces as shown,

ANALYSIS SETTINGS:

For both Tensile and Torsion test,

The simulation is run for 1 step.

The End time is assigned a value of 0.001s.

Other settings are default and as shown below

BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:

The boundary condition for this model are

For Tensile test,

  • A Displacement of 18 mm for one end of the Specimen:

  • A Fixed support for other end of the Specimen:

For Torsion test,

  • A Displacement of 1200 degrees for one end of the Specimen:

For assigning a displacement of 1200 degrees,

  • A Cylindrical Co-ordinate system is created and selected
  • Principal axis is selected as Z axis

  • A Fixed support for other end of the Specimen:

RESULTS:

ANIMATION:

For Tensile test,

  • Total Deformation

  • Equivalent stress

  • Temperature

For Torsion test,

ANIMATION:

  • Total Deformation

  • Equivalent stress

  • Temperature

CONCLUSION:

The values of the results are tabulated below,

From the results, it can be inferred that

  • Induced equivalent Stress, Total Deformation, Maximum Temperature generated is maximum for the Torsion test compared to Tensile test.
  • The failure of the specimen in Tension Test is at the necked portion, due to Maximum Tensile Stress.
  • The failure of the specimen in Torsion Test is at the Plane of maximum shear stress perpendicular to the axis of the Specimen, due to Maximum Shear Stress
  • The Temperature in Torsion Test is high due to high shear stress.
