Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge
OBJECTIVE:
- To Set up the model for Tension and Torsional test by Explicit dynamics analysis system
Steps for Tension test:
Import geometry:-
- Open the Explicit Dynamics Analysis system
- Import Steel 1006 material from engineering data resources>Explicit materials

- Open the model in Space claim to see for any abnormalities
Mechanical workbench:-
- Rename the model if needed
- Change the material to Steel 1006

Create New co-ordinate systems:-
- Create two new co ordinate system on the two faces of specimen, lkie shown below

Mesh:-
- Insert Method and type as tetrahedron for whole body
- Do face sizing for both the end of the model

- Same like above do the face sizing to the both ends
- Meshed model is shown in below image

Analysis Setting:-
- Define end time as 1E-03
- Do not change any other options
Define Load :-
- Insert a displacement load on one end

- Insert a Fixed support on the other face
Output request:-
- We need solutions for total deformation , Equivalent stress and temperatue
- After the simulation is done select solution and go to worksheet
- From the worksheet list right click on temperature>user defined results
- Evaluate result for the same, you will have temperature output
Steps for Trosion Test:
Duplicate:-
- Duplicate the tension test and rename it as Torsion test
- Change few steps in existinf set up to perform this test
Create Co-ordinate system:
- Apart from the existing co-ordinate system creat new co-ordinate system of cylindrical type

Mesh:-
- Perform a Face sizing on the filleted area of the model with 1.5mm element size
- Perform a Face sizing in the below shown region with global cordinate system

- Meshed model is shown below

Define load:-
- There should be a change displacement load, like shown below

- Same output request for thus test also
RESULTS:
Tension test:-
- Total Deformation

- Equivalent Stress

- Temperature

Torsion test:-
- Total Deformation

- Equivalent Stress

- Temperature

-
Test Total deformation(mm) Equivalent Stress(Mpa) Temperature(degree celsius) Tension 18.004 630.45 268.44 Torsion 19.381 564 467.88
CONCLUSION:
- From the above results we can see the temperature is more in Torsional stress
- The stress Generated in Tension test is more
- In tension test the necking has happened there is no fracture in this case
- In torsion test the fracture of the model has been occured
- The material used is ductile material, this material holds good for tension test and it comparitively soon fails in shear ad torsion stress
- So by looking at the results we got a satisfying output
