Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Objective:

To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided, In case for the tension test we have to displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed whereas For the torsion test, we will have to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree and finally we need to Find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach images to show your results.

Tension Test:

  • We are analysing the tension test using Explicit Dynamics module of ANSYS Workbench.
  • From the engineering data source we have assigned steel 1060 to the specimen provided.
  • The geometry has been imported to carry out the tension test as shown below
  • In the mesh section we have assigned method as tetrahedron and for the part of the specimen we have assigned a face sizing with sphere of infulence of radius 22mm and element size of 3 mm. For the sphere of infulence we have assigned extra coordinate system.
  • In the analysis setting we have only used one step and the end time assigned is 1e-003. The other description is shown below.
  • One end of the specimen is fixed and the other end is given a displacement of 18 mm.
  • Finally we have assigned total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen in the solution section to evaluate the results.

Torsion Test:

  • We are analysing the tension test using Explicit Dynamics module of ANSYS Workbench.
  • From the engineering data source we have assigned steel 1060 to the specimen provided.
  • The geometry has been imported to carry out the tension test as shown below
  • In the mesh section we have assigned method as tetrahedron and for the part of the specimen we have assigned a face sizing with sphere of infulence of radius 22mm and element size of 3 mm. For the sphere of infulence we have assigned extra coordinate system. For the torsion test we have even refined the mesh at the critical section with element size of 2mm and 1mm as shown below using sphere of infulence method for selecting the section.
  • In the analysis setting we have only used one step and the end time assigned is 1e-003. The other description is shown below.
  • One end of the specimen is fixed and the other end is given a displacement by an angle of 1200 degree.
  • Finally we have assigned total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen in the solution section to evaluate the results.

Results:

Tensile test:

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Temperature of the specimen

Torsion test:

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Temperature of the specimen

Discussion & Conclusion:

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Temperature of the specimen

Tensile test 18.004 mm 631.28 MPa 267.35 *C
Torsion test 25.239 mm 524.92 MPa 431.06 *C
  • From the above table we can see that the total deformation in case of tensile test of the specimen is 18 mm how ever when the same specimen is twisted by 1200 degree in torsion test the deformation is found to be around 25 mm.
  • The equivalent stress developed during tensile test is 631.28 MPa and in case of torsion test the stress is 525 MPa.
  • The temperature generated at the rapture area in the tensile case is 267.35 *C and 431*C in case of torsion test.
  • In the tensile test the fracture occur perpendicular to the loading axis where as in case of torsion test the fracture occur at an angle of 45 degree of the loading axis.
