Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge
Tension Test
Aim of the project:
To perform the Tension test for the given specimen model and capture Total deformation, Equivalent stress, and temperature.
In the tension test fix the one end of specimen and displace the other end by 18mm.
Set Up
- In the Ansys workbench we chose Explicit dynamics and in engineering data we added the material Steel1006.
- After Importing the Specimen model in the Geometry, we opened it in SpceClaim and checked for any abnormalities.
- Once we opened the Specimen model in Mechanical module, we renamed it and assigned Steel 1006 material to the same.
- We have added 2 extra co-ordinate systems to the model as shown below.

- Meshing was done by adding 2 different face sizing with type Sphere of influence. Radius of Sphere was 22mm and mesh element size 3mm

- In the analysis settings we have changed only End time as 1e-3 and Then we fixed an end of specimen also added Displacement load of 18mm to the other end in X direction.

- Finally, we requested for desired solutions and got the results as shown below.
Total deformation : - Maximum : 18.005 mm

Equivalent Elastic strain
Maximum: 0.35446 mm/mm

Equivalent Elastic stress
Maximum: 608.84 MPa

Temperature
Maximum : 266.92 °C

Torsion test
Aim of the project:
To perform the Torsion test for the given specimen model and capture Total deformation, Equivalent stress, and temperature.
In the torsion test fix the one end of specimen and rotate the other end by 1200 degree.
Set Up
- In the Ansys workbench we chose Duplicated the Explicit dynamics which we already created for Tension test.
- Now opened the model in mechanical module. Added one more coordinate system which is Cylindrical, rotating in the principal axis of Z and orientation of rotation will be in Y axis as shown below.

- Under Meshing we have added 2 more face sizing as shown below and got good quality meshed specimen.
- Kept one end of Specimen Fixed as it is. In the displacement load we have changed the coordinate system to newly created cylindrical coordinate system and in the Y direction added 1200 degree as displacement angle.

- Now we requested desired solution again and found results as shown below. Total Deformation; Maximum: 12.963 mm
Equivalent Elastic strain
Maximum: 1.9505 mm/mm
Equivalent Elastic stress
Maximum: 607.89 MPa

Temperature
Maximum : 439.55 °C

- All Simulation result videos of both tests are attached.
