Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

OBJECTIVE:

For this challenge, we have to perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided.

For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed.

For the torsion test, We need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree.

  1. total deformation
  2. equivalent stress and
  3. temperature of the specimen

Attach appropriate images to show your results.

PROCEDURE FOLLOWED:-

Create a new Explicit dynamics and add a material Steel 1006 bearing properties as below,

Import the geometry and open in space-claim to review the model if any errors correct it.

For this model we have to simulate the 2 results,

  1. Tension test
  2. Torsion test

Close space-claim and open the model in mechanical workbench,

If required rename the geometry, and also assign the material Steel 1006.

  1. Tension Test

For the static end and dynamic end of the model, create 2 coordinate system for both of them for tension test.

Global coordinate system

Static end coordinate system

Dynamic end coordinate system

After the coordinate system assignment now we have to give commands for Mesh sizes and Method,

Insert a Mesh Method:

Mesh Sizing for static size,

Mesh sizing for Dynamic size

After the mesh assignments now we have to set the Analysis setting for proper explicit analysis

End time to be given as = 1E-3

Displacement to be given to dynamic size of the model upto 18 mm

Also a fixed support to be given  at the static end of the model so that it is fixed and no displacement takes place on this side.

After all the assignments has been done now its time to command for the result required. In our model we have to give the Total deformation, Equivalent stress & Temperature of the specimen.

Total Deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Temperature of the specimen:

  1. Torsion Test:

For torsion test we have to assign some more of the setting to the model so that the torsion analysis can be obtained,

The different settings which has to be Implemented starts with the coordinate system,

We  have to insert the cylindrical coordinate system,

Also the face meshing has to be implemented to the 2 parts which is in between of the model because of the reason that the torsion will be occurring in the mid portion of the model.

Rest  all the setting has to be similar to the previous one. The solutions obtained are:

Total Deformation:

Equivalent Elastic stress:

Temperature of the specimen:

CONCLUSION:-

The simulation for both Tension & Torsion of the specimen is carried out and the solution has been tabulated below:-
