Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Title: Tension and Torsion test of Specimen

Objective:

For this challenge, we have to perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided below the video corresponding to the challenge.

For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed. You will need to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach appropriate images to show your results.

For the torsion test, you will need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree. Find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach images to show your results.

  • Case setup for Tension test:

1.Material: Material used for Tension test challange is Steel 1006.

2. Create 2 other coordinate systems other than global coordinate systems.

3. Meshing:

Method of mesh is changed to Tetrahedron.

Face sizing is done for 2 faces and the other element size as per default.

4. Analysis settings:

Given as per video

5.Supports and loads:

Fixed support is given to one face and displacement load to another face of about 18mm along x axis.

Results:

Conclusions:

Tabulate the results as per simulation

Case Max.Equivalent stress(Mpa) Max.Equivalent strain(mm/mm) Total Deformation(mm) Temperature©
Tension test 631.28 0.003045 18.004 267.35

1. Max.Equivalent stress induced when the specimen is displaced to 18 mm is 631.28 Mpa which occured at the necking region.

2.Max.Equi strain induced is 0.003045.

3.Total deformation induced is 18.004 mm which is the displaced distance.

4.Max temperature induced in specimen is 267.35 c.

5. From the result we can also say that the material is a ductile material as it is forming cup cone shape upon application of tensile load.

  • Case setup for Torsion test:

1.Material: Material used for Torsion test challange is Steel 1006.

2.Create 3 other coordinate systems other than global coordinate systems.

3.Meshing:

Method of mesh is changed to Tetrahedron.

Face sizing is done as per video.

4. Analysis settings:

Given as per video

5.Supports and loads:

Fixed support is given to one face

Displacement load about 1200 degrees rotation is given.

Results:

Conclusions:

Tabulate the results as per simulation

Case Max.Equivalent stress(Mpa) Max.Equivalent strain(mm/mm) Total Deformation(mm) Temperature©
Torsion test 634.91 0.0030153 19.408 468.05

1. Max.Equivalent stress induced when the specimen is rotated to 1200 degrees is 634.91 Mpa which occured at the center of specimen.

2.Max.Equi strain induced is 0.0030153.

3.Total deformation induced is 19.408 mm to the ruptured piece.

4.Max temperature induced in specimen is 468.05c.

5. Temperture induced is very much higher in torsion test compared to tensile test for the same specimen.
