Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Case Study of Tension & Torsion Mechanism.

Objective:

For this challenge, you will have to perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided below the video corresponding to the challenge.

For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed. You will need to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach appropriate images to show your results.

For the torsion test, you will need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree. Find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen and attach images to show your results.

Procedure:

Case1:

For Case 1, Static Structural Analysis is carried out on Workpiece. The material is Steel 1006 and the analysis is carried out on Ansys Workbench. The geometry of the model is imported on the Ansys Workbench for analysis. The Analysis system taken is Explicit Dynamic.

2D Geometry is extruded in the Space Claim to get the model to be imported to the ANSYS. The Extruded model is as shown in the image below:

The properties of the material is stated below:

The model is meshed using Ansys Mesher with an element size of 3 mm, and a patch conforming method using tetrahedrons was employed. This is done to get the best refinement within the limitation of Ansys Academic License.

A mesh metric that identifies the elements according to their quality was employed and it can be seen that element of lowest quality are minimal. Most of the elements have very high quality in the range of 0.7-1. Hence, the mesh is of acceptable quality. The meshed model is shown in image below:

The Workpiece is fixed at one end and is displaced by 18 mm from the other end, simulation is then run with the setting and the results are then obtained.

Case 2:

New Cylindrical co-ordinates are inserted at the center of the workpiece and the workpiece is rotated by 1200 degrees from the one end.

Results:

Total deformation of the 2 cases are compared.

Time [s] Minimum [mm] Maximum [mm] Average [mm]

1.0001e-003 0. 18.058 8.9684

1.e-003 0. 17.308 3.5007

Equivalent Stress of the 2 cases are compared.

Time [s] Minimum [Mpa] Maximum [Mpa] Average [Mpa]

1.0001e-003 0. 404.75 41.127

1.e-003 0. 646.41 169.86

Temperature of the 2 cases are compared.

Time [s] Minimum Maximum Average

1.0001e-003 22. 295.71 31.138

1.e-003 22. 433.48 118.19

The total deformation on the gear is as plotted and is shown on the plate below.

The Equivalent stress is plotted on the plate and is as shown below

The Temperature is plotted on the plate and is as shown below

Conclusion:

The average deformation in Tesion specimen is more than that of torsion, equivalemt stress is more in torsion specimen while the temperature in case of torsion is more than that of the tesnion.
