Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Objective:

The aim of this challenge is to simulate a tension test and a torsion test on a specimen and find out the equivalent stress, total deformation and temperature of the specimen.

Case setup and execution:

Tension test

First the explicit dynamics module was opened and the steel 1006 material was added to the material library from the explicit materials in the engineering data sources. Then the geometry was imported.

The Mechanical module was opened to setup the model. The specimen was assigned the steel 1006 material.

First 2 new coordinate systems were created by selecting the cylindrical faces on two ends of the specimen.

Then the mesh was created. The face sizing was provided to the 2 cylindrical faces on 2 ends. The element type was chosen as sphere of influence and the newly created coordinate systems were selected as origins. The sphere radius was selected as 22 mm and the element size was 3 mm.

In the analysis settings, the end time was selected as 0.001 seconds. Rest of the parameters were kept unchanged.

A fixed support was provided to one end and the other end of the specimen was given a displacement of 18 mm.

The output was requested for total deformation, equivalent stress and strain. The model was run.

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Total deformation

From the worksheet, the user defined result was created for temperature, which is shown below

Torsion test

For torsion test, the module of the tension test was duplicated. In the new duplicated module, a new cylindrical coordinate system was inserted with the origin at the global origin.

In the meshing. face sizing was provided to the shoulders of the specimen with element size of 1.5 mm. Also using the sphere of influence, the central face was given face sizing of 1 mm for which the radius of the sphere was 8 mm.

The new displacement value for rotation was to be given. For this, in the displacement entity window, the newly created cylindrical coordinate system was selected. The X and Z values were made zero. The displacement in Y axis was given as 1200 degrees.

Rest of the setup was same as the tension test. The model was run.

Results:

Equivalent stress

Equivalent strain

Total deformation

Temperature

Conclusion:

Thus, the results for both the cases are summarised in the following table:

Tension test Torsion test
Total deformation (mm) 18.004 18.957
Equivalent stress (MPa) 623.69 581.04
Equivalent strain 0.0030323 0.0028856
Temperature (Celsius) 255.5 405.79

The simulation files are attached with the report.
