Week 9: Project 1 - Surface preparation and Boundary Flagging (PFI)
Objective:
- Boundary Flagging.
- Surface Preparation.
- No-hydro case setup.
Surafce Setup:
The base geometry has surface errors that need to be cleared before starting with the simulation.
Converge utilizes geometry provided in the '.stl' format, which contains a triangulated surface that makes up the body.
The geometry of the PFI engine is having some geometrical errors. Some of the errors are listed below:

Intersections:
This problem occurs, when triangles passes through one another in the geometry.

This problem can be resolved by moving the intersecting triangles. This is done after boundary flagging so that only the intersecting triangles can be selected and moved. After boundary flagging & translation of the triangles along the normal axis, we have obtained the geometry without intersecting trangles.

Open Edges:
This problem arises when there are holes or spaces in the surface geometry.

This can be resolved by patching.

Overlapping Triangles:
This problem arises when there are overlapping triangles in the geometry.

This issue can be easily fixed by deleting one set of overlapping triangles.

Normal Orientation:
CONVERGE Studio requires that the normal for all the triangles be pointed inwards (towards fluid flow).
CONVERGE Studio is equipped with the tool which can invert the normals of all the connected triangles propagating from one location.

Non manifold Problems:
Non manifold problems occur when an edge is shared by more than two triangles.

This problem is resolved by deleting the triangle creating error, then filling the empty area through patching.

After fixing errors & running diagnosis:

Intake & Exhaust Ports

Inflow & Outflow

Intake and Exhaust Valves

Regions:
Regions are used to create events between the zones & to initialize the realistic initial conditions in the flow domain.
The figure below shows the boundaries assigned to the regions.
